“Babies should wear pajamas that are made of soft, breathable fabrics like cotton, which help to regulate body temperature,” says Dr. Freda Singletary, a pediatrician from Fayetteville, North Carolina. “Choosing the right fit that's neither too tight nor too loose is essential for comfort.” Parents may also want to avoid pajamas with complicated snaps or hard embellishments that can make changing more difficult and can even interfere with baby’s comfort.
It's also wise to pay attention to any specific skin sensitivities (like eczema) or allergies, as some materials may irritate a baby's delicate skin, adds Dr. Singletary. According to the National Eczema Society, wool and synthetics like nylon and polyester can cause overheating and sweating, which can lead to irritation. Cotton and bamboo are gentler choices.
Consider the temperature where you live too. “In warm weather, it's important to choose baby pajamas that are lightweight and made from breathable fabrics like cotton or muslin,” says Singletary. “These materials help to move moisture away from the skin and allow heat to escape, keeping the baby cool.”
A little trick to know that your baby is appropriately dressed? The general rule of thumb is to dress your little one in one additional layer than an adult would need to feel comfortable.
