If you like to come home from a hard day at the office and put your feet up on the coffee table, you might want to think again. Especially if you put those feet up without removing your shoes first. china cheap chairs for sale
A viral clip starring Dr Karl Kruszelnicki explains how two new pieces of scientific data show exactly what happens when your outside shoes come indoors, and bring with them some unwelcome guests.
“The first data point shows that if you get brand new shoes and wear them for three months, at the end of three months 93 per cent will have fecal contamination,” the scientist says.
“That’s a polite way of saying there’s poo on the sole.
“It comes from cat or dog poo when you walk through a park, or you have to walk into a public toilet, or your own toilet at home if you’ve got babies who happen to be really messy.”
Which is why so many of us try to keep shoes out of lounge room areas and if you have boys like me, you will know just how challenging that can be.
Dr Karl then explains why not only shoes need to be avoided once indoors, but coffee tables and specifically coffee tables owned by groups of guys.
“The second data point we’re looking at is of a group of young males who live in houses without females. And when you look at their coffee tables, 70 percent have fecal contamination.
“So here’s a PSA; probably don’t do it (put shoes up).”
The comments under the clip were made up of those who were disgusted, and those who found it hilarious.

“This is why in a large portion of the world, people leave their shoes at the door,” said one astute user referencing other cultures where the concept of shoes inside the home is a big no-no.
Another seemed to suggest the solution was simple: “No shoes in the house! Problem solved. Yuk.”
“The fact this needs to be a PSA is just mind-boggling,” added another similarly-minded woman.
Something troubling a number of the commenters was pets — what do we do with them when they come inside?
“Hang on… do dogs need to wear shoes outside so they can take them off at the door” said a troubled pet lover.
“What do you do about dogs coming in the house the? Or does everyone saying ‘shoes stay at the door’ also mean dogs stay outside?”
Another Dr Karl fan was untroubled, looking for science on how much harm this fecal matter actually causes.
“While I do happily live in a shoe-free home, have we any data on how many Australians needlessly die from coffee table fecal contamination?!”
Finally, someone took a very different view of Dr Karl’s public service announcement.
“Lol, what I took from that was to stay away from boys’ share houses.”
