ELLENVILLE, N.Y. — A review of video footage shows that the village woman whose electric scooter was struck by a car was at fault Wednesday when she crossed U.S. Route 209 at Center Street against the light. The car that struck her had a green light at the time, Police Chief Philip Mattracion said Friday.
Shamica Bell, 36, who suffered a brain bleed and other critical injuries after striking her head on the car, remains in critical but stable condition, Mattracion said.
“A review of the video of a local business clearly shows that the driver of the vehicle proceeding eastbound on Route 52 had the green light. It further shows that the scooter did not stop. … the electric scooter proceeded through the intersection without stopping, it kept going through the red light and struck the vehicle on the left front fender area which caused her to be ejected and her body to go into the windshield and hit the top of the roof,” Mattracion said.
The vehicle that struck Bell was driven by Jennifer Joray, 31, of Ellenville. She was not injured.
Bell, who was lying in the road when police arrived, was treated at the scene by paramedics from Ellenville Rescue Squad and flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where she remained Friday, the chief said.
