When the smartwatch game started, Samsung was there, front and center, as they've always been when it comes to mobile gadgets. Although the company didn't start off with Tizen, it very quickly became the company's choice of operating system for these wearables. Environmental
It was in 2021 that Samsung partnered with Google to start using Wear OS on its smartwatches, and that point marked the gradual descent of the Tizen smartwatch platform. Today, it has become official that Tizen's end of life is near, as 2025 will mark major Tizen functionality being shut down.
Samsung's smartwatch OS of choice has been Wear OS for about the past three years, and moving to Google's OS is always the best choice for deeper integration with Android. However, Tizen has been left mostly in the dark all the time that Samsung has been using Wear OS. If you know the way software platforms go, it was pretty obvious that Tizen would have to be killed off at some point, and now we know when that will be.
We know this thanks to Seaweed_Maximum on Reddit, who posted what appears to be a machine-translated post from a member of the Galaxy Store Operations team. This post laid out the timeline for the conclusion of Galaxy Store support on Samsung smartwatches running on Tizen. It goes like this:
Essentially, by September 30th, 2025, all support for Tizen watches on the Galaxy Store will end, so at that point, you'll be locked to whichever applications are on the watch at that time until eternity (you should still be able to sideload though).
Let's make something clear. If you have a Samsung smartwatch that runs on Tizen, you're not going to have a brick on your hands come September 30th, 2025. However, it will essentially mean that you can only use your Tizen smartwatch for what is on it at that point. Deleting an app after the final deadline means that you'll never get it back. However, you will still be able to use the watch as you please for however long.
You're going to be affected by this change if you have any Samsung smartwatch released before August 2021. In case you're not sure of when yours was made, that includes all of the following smartwatches:
This is a big notice from the South Korean manufacturer, but it was genuinely only a matter of time. Wear OS is the future of smartwatches now.
