ProcellaCOR is a chemical herbicide that was approved by the EPA in 2017. It kills the tenacious Eurasian watermilfoil, an invasive aquatic plant found in many Adirondack lakes and ponds.

The chemical herbicide has since been used in lakes across New England, and in closer bodies of water, like Minerva Lake and Lake Luzerne, with no apparent side effects.

Lake George has been battling milfoil in its lake for decades, using manual removal. That work costs about half a million dollars per year.

The Lake George Park Commission, a state agency, wants to use the ProcellaCOR to fight milfoil. In 2022, it got a permit from the APA to do so.

The Lake George Association, a conservation nonprofit, then sued the APA. It opposes the use of ProcellaCOR, and says it hasn’t been used long enough to truly understand the impact on water systems.
