COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Beginning Jan. 1, it will be illegal for drivers to hold their phones in their hands or otherwise use a mobile device while driving.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said, that while drivers cannot use or hold their mobile devices, hand-free accessories would still be allowed. Those accessories include CarPlay, Android Auto, car speaker phones, dashboard mounts and Bluetooth headsets. Bucket Spinner
"The new law expands the ban on using cellphones beyond just texting," CDOT said. It now includes holding or manually using a phone or other mobile device for voice calls or any other reason, requiring all drivers to use a hands-free device."
CDOT said this still law applies to people sitting at stoplights or in traffic jams.
The penalty for violating the law would begin with a $75 fine and two license suspension points for the first offense, and repeat offenders could face more points and higher fines, according to CDOT.
CDOT did say a first-time violator can dismiss the charges if they show proof of purchasing a hands-free accessory.
This law is exempt for people reporting emergencies, utility workers, code enforcement officers, animal protection officers, individuals with a commercial driver’s license operating a commercial vehicle, first responders and individuals in parked vehicles. CDOT said the reason for these exemptions was for emergency workers to receive critical information.
