KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While most farmers’ markets close for the winter, the River Market is open year-round on Saturdays.
A flea market was added to the downtown farmers market this January and February. The concept has taken off as the popularity of vintage clothing has skyrocketed.
Superstar Taylor Swift made vintage Chiefs wear hip, now anything with the team’s name flies off the racks. Especially if it’s from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
Concert t-shirts are also a big hit. Saturday morning, there was a colorful Jimi Hendrix tour tee worth a whopping $400. Customers will also pay more than $100 for vintage Jimmy Buffett t-shirts.
It’s finds like this that make customers feel like they’re on a treasure hunt.
“Yeah, it’s insane,” Star Girl Market vendor, Danni Vejar said. “We’ve seen bigger cities around the United States that have been doing this for a decade. Or even up to 20 years now. Kansas City has been growing in popularity. They’re starting to catch on to the trend now.”
“A lot of people above 30 years old are looking for this kind of stuff cuz it’s nostalgic,” Vejar continued. “People love the nostalgia it brings them back to their era and it’s exciting. It’s insane how much people are coming here every Saturday to come see vintage clothing.”
Today was supposed to be the last day for the vintage clothing flea market, but because it’s become so popular, they are bringing it back on Sundays starting in April.
Beginning next week, the farmers market at the river market is open both Saturday and Sunday mornings.
