“The latest addition to our optimized tool range is the CoroMill® Plura ball nose for ISO S,” stated Liam Haglington, the Product Manager overseeing solid carbide end milling tools at Sandvik Coromant. “This launch includes two new product geometries tailored for titanium and HRSA workpieces. These tools are designed for profiling, particularly in semi-finishing and finishing tasks, such as blisk and blade machining.”
Given the critical need for productivity, extended tool life, and process security when working with ISO S materials, the CoroMill® Plura ball nose geometries were developed with these factors in mind. “We’ve paid special attention to the tool design,” Haglington added. “The tools feature a new face geometry to avoid unfavorable cutting conditions at the center, an uneven tooth pitch for optimal dynamic stability and vibration control, and new Zertivo™ 2.0 grades specifically developed for these workpiece materials, enhancing wear resistance and tool longevity.”
Featuring a maximum of six flutes, the CoroMill® Plura ball nose end mills offer the advantage of higher feed rates without compromising surface quality, resulting in reduced machining times and lower costs per part. Although primarily intended for machining aerospace engine blisks, these tools demonstrate exceptional versatility in various other applications.
Dr Markus Groppe, Global Product and Digital Application Manager for solid carbide end milling tools at Sandvik Coromant, emphasized their optimization for profiling applications in HRSA and titanium alloys. He highlighted their superior performance in machining blades and forged structural components. However, these tools are also well-suited for use beyond aerospace, such as in the medical and automotive industries.
Examples include machining hip joints and turbochargers, where the CoroMill® Plura ball nose end mills excel. Moreover, with secondary applications in hardened steel for the HRSA range and stainless steel for the titanium range, the six-flute tools ensure optimal productivity and tool longevity in all types of die and mould applications.
The standard selection includes special grades designed for titanium and HRSA, with diameters ranging from 3–20 mm and 0.125–0.750 inch, featuring four to six flutes, a 1.5×D depth of cut, and usable lengths of 3×D and 5×D. If the standard selection doesn’t meet specific customer requirements, Sandvik Coromant provides a wide range of tailored solutions to address unique needs.
Sathish D, Global Product Manager for Customized Solid Carbide End Milling Tools at Sandvik Coromant, stated, “In addition to our standard offering, we are also introducing an extensive range of customized solutions with various functionalities to meet diverse customer demands.” He added, “If customers still feel something is lacking, our advanced engineered solutions have it covered.”
