Better Homes & Gardens / Brian Kopinski
Your home’s entryway is one of the most important areas in your home. It welcomes you and your guests into your sanctuary, so making it a cozy yet organized space seems like a no-brainer.
A console table is one of the most important pieces to make your entryway inviting, but can also be practical and function as a pit stop before leaving or arriving home.
To find the best console tables, we spent hours researching top-rated products while considering them based on size, height, finish, material, style, and storage capacity. We also spoke with Richard Louise of Dovetails and Stitches for his insight on what to look for when shopping for the best console tables for your home.

It’s important to first measure the space where you want your console table to go before deciding on one. Louise says the width and depth should be chosen based on the available space and desired functionality.
For example, in entryways where space is often limited, a narrower table can help maintain an open, welcoming feel while still providing a practical surface for daily essentials.
“When selecting a console table, it's crucial to consider not only the height but also the width and depth to ensure the piece fits perfectly within the intended space,” he says. “Most console tables range between 28 to 32 inches in height, aligning with ergonomic standards for accessibility and visual proportionality. For living rooms or larger spaces, a wider console can serve as a statement piece, offering more surface area for decorative items, lamps, or storage solutions.”
According to Louise, the finish on a console table usually refers to the protective coating on furniture, especially wood. Lacquer, wax, varnish, staining, and polish are common finishes for wood while powder-coating and glossy metallic are common finishes for metals such as iron and stainless steel.
Louise recommends choosing the finish based on your style and preferences; in other words, a matte or neutral finish will work with industrial style while a natural finish can work with coastal or farmhouse.
You’re more likely to find a console table made of wood or metal, or a mix of both, but other materials such as rattan or acrylic can give your space a unique look. Louise prefers solid wood for durability, but choosing the right material for you can depend on preferred level of maintenance, size of your space, lifestyle factors, and overall style.
"The choice of wood affects both the durability and aesthetic of the console table,” he says. “I recommend hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and cherry since they provide unique grain patterns and color tones, catering to different style preferences and ensuring the durability needed for furniture to last generations.”
There are several console table styles and designs, from industrial-style metal console tables to those made of woven seagrass. Louise recommends choosing one that fits in with your home’s interior design style, but also considering something that can be a statement piece that showcases your style and personality as soon as you walk into your home. After all, most console tables are placed in the entryway so it’ll be the first piece you and your guests will see.
“The style of a console table significantly contributes to the harmony and aesthetic of any living space. When selecting a console table, consider how its style, finish, and wood choice will integrate with the existing decor and furniture within your home,” says Louise. “By carefully matching these aspects with the ambiance and existing furnishings, a console table can tie a room together, making it look cohesive and thoughtfully curated.”
Not all console tables have additional storage features, such as shelves and drawers, but it may not always be necessary. If you like to take your shoes off as soon as you enter your home, you may want to opt for one with cubbies or a bottom shelf. For Louise, these features help maintain a tidy space by organizing items like keys, mail, or decorative objects.
While a console table can be placed in various rooms throughout your home, they are most often found in entryways and hallways, providing a convenient spot for keys, mail, or decorative accents.
“A console table is traditionally placed in an entryway or hallway to provide a surface for everyday items,” says Louise. “However, it's also perfectly suited behind a sofa, in a dining room, or even in a bedroom as a vanity area. The placement depends on where you need additional surface space and storage solutions within your home.”
Since console tables mostly serve a functional purpose, they should be at a comfortable height for you to place and reach things. Louise says the ideal height for a console table ranges between 28 to 32 inches, with 30 inches being the standard.
“This height balances accessibility and proportionality, aligning well with other pieces of furniture in terms of scale and usability,” he says.
Not all console tables come with storage, but it may not always be necessary. Depending on your preference and lifestyle needs (typically those with larger households or with children may require additional storage), your console table can be a sleek and minimal arch design or a table with several drawers or shelves.
“Choosing a console table with storage depends on personal needs, the functionality of the space, and to some extent, the style of the furniture,” says Louise. “A console table with drawers or shelves can be extremely beneficial if you require a spot to discreetly store items like keys, documents, or other essentials. It can also combine the elegance of a clean tabletop with the practicality of hidden storage.”
