New tamper-evident, recyclable fibre-based labels revealed by Faller Packaging | Packaging Europe

Faller Packaging has developed a recyclable, fibre-based, semi-transparent and tamper-proof label with first-opening indication, designed for use in the pharmaceutical industry.

In a bid to ensure its recyclability, the semi-transparent label is made of a fibre-based, unmixed material, with Faller Packaging reporting that the solution uses paper sourced from sustainable forestry. Tamper Resistant Stickers

“For the outer material, we opted for a semi-transparent paper made from pure cellulose fibres, with no chemical additives,” explains Niklas Mößner, product manager at Faller Packaging. “The product is therefore biodegradable and can be recycled.

“In combination with a fibre-based folding carton or an outsert leaflet, the result is an unmixed end product that can be fed into the recycling process without sorting and thus achieves the maximum recycling rate.”

Its tamper-proof features are designed to comply with the EN 16679:2014 standard, while its first-opening indication falls in line with EN 16679:2014. The label is positioned over the tuck-in flap of a folding carton and reveals whether the pack has been opened previously – a move set to protect both products and brands.

Customers can implement additional perforations for easier opening, although Faller Packaging emphasizes that the addition is not necessary.

Furthermore, the label uses an acrylate-based adhesive with high levels of initial and final adhesion. Since the label cannot be removed without leaving residue, it is a further measure against tampering and aspires to help brands protect against tampering and counterfeits.

The label is also said to offer ‘optimum’ machinability, with its transparency negating the need to change the layout or design of existing folding cartons.

“We are very proud of this tamper-proof and sustainable label solution that we can now offer to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry,” Mößner concludes. “For us, sustainability is a central component of our corporate DNA and more relevant than ever.”

In a similar development, Securikett has unveiled a tamper-proof security seal made of paper. It is hoped to protect cardboard packaging against a range of tampering methods while contributing to a circular economy.

It followed previous steps taken by Securikett to prevent tampering by improve product protection, including applying its HighContrast technology to security closure labels on screw caps or hinged closures.

Meanwhile, Schreiner MediPharm’s specialty Void-Labels play a similar role. They are designed to reveal tampering attempts and first opening to ensure that pharmaceutical packaging remains safely sealed until its intended use.
