Many TV stands and TV consoles look outdated or bulky. Replacing an old entertainment setup can refresh an entire living room or basement area.

We know better than most how tricky buying furniture online can be, and you don’t want your newly assembled TV stand falling apart. That’s why we found our favorite TV stands from online retailers—including Amazon—assembled them, used them and cleaned them over months of testing. That way, you can shop more confidently, knowing that your new entertainment console will fit your needs and not be a waste of money.

Here are our five favorite TV stands we tested that will fit your design needs for years.

Ikea furniture is known for being affordable and trendy (e.g., the Billy Bookcase). While some Ikea furniture requires intense assembly, this TV stand only took our Editor, Caroline Stanko, two hours to build alone. The instructions were easy to follow, and she only needed a screwdriver to assemble the whole thing. However, the boxes that arrived were heavy, so we recommend permitting Ikea delivery to drop the boxes off right at your doorstep (which is what Stanko did).

The TV stand is made of solid pine that has been painted and coated in a thin acrylic lacquer. This piece is solid, unlike many other Ikea products made of particle board. Once assembled, Stanko found it very sturdy, and it didn’t wobble at all. To clean it, simply use some water and a touch of dish soap or other gentle cleaner. Use Windex or a similar window cleaner to clean the glass doors.

The back of the unit is open if you want the shelves to hold your router/extension cord. You can hide cords by securing them outside the middle support piece. Since the back of the stand is partially open, you may also need to cover the cords so you don’t see them through the doors.

“The stand has clean lines, and the shelves hold a lot,” Stanko says. “It might bother some people that you can see everything that is on the shelves, but that can be solved by utilizing bins on the shelves (or putting some sort of film on the doors).” Stanko also says that the Havsta TV Stand is the perfect height for watching TV from the sofa, and the shelves hold a bunch of her candles, books and craft supplies.

“Since this is solid pine, it is a great value,” Stanko adds. “It doesn’t feel bulky, but it holds a large TV and a ton of stuff.”

If our top pick isn’t modern or Scandinavian enough for your tastes, this TV stand from Amazon will surely be with its light wood, fluted cabinets, black finishes and rounded edges. Similarly to our top pick, this stand also took two hours for our product tester, Madi Koetting, to assemble with the help of another person. “I’m so happy with the overall look and design of this media console, and the bounty of storage space inside is truly the cherry on top,” Koetting says.

The dual cabinets on both sides of the stand are open to offer two tiers of shelf storage inside. We love that you can sit a TV on top of this stand or mount it above it for more security. Additionally, this piece doubles as a beautiful entryway piece. Since it’s light wood, it doesn’t show wear and tear easily, and dust is practically invisible on the surface.

“I really wanted a functional yet beautiful piece of furniture, and this media console is a gorgeous centerpiece in my 800-square-foot apartment,” Koetting adds. “I get so many compliments!”

Koetting mounted her 55-inch TV above the TV stand but says it would fit on the stand along with any accessories if it weren’t mounted. Despite its length, the TV stand doubles as a media console and a sideboard in her mid-size apartment. If you’re working with

If you’re looking for a quality piece of furniture to splurge on, Amazon may not come to mind as your retailer of choice. However, Senior Editor Caroline Lubinsky shopped for a top-notch TV stand before finally landing on the BDI Corridor Media Console. However, this sturdy console weighs over 200 pounds, and since Amazon doesn’t offer white-glove delivery, you’ll likely need some help getting this console inside. Once you do, the piece is mostly assembled. It took our tester about half an hour to put it together. This console arrived in pristine condition thanks to its extra careful packaging.

Of course, being our splurge pick, this piece of furniture is made of solid wood—no particle board here! Plus, if you have a huge entertainment setup, this TV stand has cable management channels, rear access channels, a soundbar shelf and other adjustable shelves for all your gaming and media equipment. “You can easily add everything you can think of neatly in these cabinets,” Lubinsky says.

“I love that the top of the media console is glass,” Lubinsky adds. “It makes it easy to wipe down. I have a feeling this piece will last for years without showing any major signs of wear.”

After testing this product for months, Lubinsky still loves it, calling it a “standout piece.” It holds TVs up to 85 inches, so it’s great for a game or movie room. It’s the perfect setup for people who want to keep their cords, soundbars and gaming systems in one easy-to-reach place.

If you’re looking for an affordable TV stand that doesn’t look like it came out of your grandma’s basement, then the Vivo Artistic Easel is one to consider. “It’s super affordable and incredibly trendy,” Shopping Editor Mary Henn says. “It took virtually no time to assemble and mount a TV, and you can easily move the stand around a room to watch TV from any spot.”

This TV stand is perfect for people looking to furnish a small space like a studio apartment on a budget, and you don’t have to sacrifice quality for affordability either. “I was impressed by the quality of the legs on this easel stand,” Henn says. “They are a rich, chestnut color that doesn’t look cheap.” The TV stand holds TVs 45-65 inches, so it works for most TVs of average size.

The easel stand takes up little to no floor space and can match several different décor styles. While it’s a great budget pick for apartment dwellers, it may not be the best choice for those with rowdy animals or small children, as the stand could easily be knocked over if run into. Additionally, there doesn’t appear to be any way to secure this stand to the wall or floor, so you’ll need to be extra careful not to knock it over.

Save even more space by combining your TV console and electric fireplace with the Festivo TV Stand. Stylish and functional, the console stands out for its neutral, sleek design that’ll fit in seamlessly with most modern interiors without looking like an afterthought.

“It looks very good online, but even better in person,” Senior Shopping Editor Caroline Lubinsky says. “Plus, the fireplace feature looks realistic.”

Lubinsky adds that the two-in-one fireplace console feels quality, sturdy and doesn’t look cheap. Additionally, it has a hole for feed wires, which allows you to make an out-of-sight docking station for electronics or gaming systems.

We love this pick because the gray exterior color goes with many different styles, and the wicker material on the doors—while of the moment—is a traditional element that will look good for a long time. We think this stand would look great with a small or large TV. You could also hang your TV over the console and use the surface as a mantle feature.

When shopping for the best TV, consider dimensions, weight capacity, ease of assembly and cost. In addition, some units offer storage capabilities—something to consider if you want to store items such as movies or games. Finally, quality and materials should be considered, along with buyer reviews. Better yet, if you can find reviews with photos and long-term product testing (like we’ve done here), you’ll know whether the TV stand will truly stand the test of time.

The shopping editors who compiled this list of the best TV stands have design and home decor expertise. They selected media consoles that they believe will look good for years. They also tested each TV stand for months in real living environments so you can shop safely and confidently.

We rounded up five expert product testers and shopping editors to find the best TV stands online. They combined their years of shopping and home design expertise to create a list of their favorite TV stands—but that wasn’t enough. Our editors assembled and tested each TV stand, mounting TVs, cleaning each piece of furniture and using each TV stand in their homes for months.

To avoid straining your neck and back while watching TV, it’s best to have the center of your TV at or just below eye level. Low TV stands, therefore, are often a smart choice when watching TV from a couch or chair.

Your TV shouldn’t be wider than your TV stand, especially if you are placing your TV on top of the console. If a TV is too big for a TV stand, it can be vulnerable to tipping. If you are mounting your TV just above your media console, you have a little more leeway regarding size.

Wood. Hardwood is the best material for a well-designed and sturdy TV stand, and it should last for years.
