Why I’m Finally Buying the Peeler Ayo Edebiri Uses in ‘The Bear’

Season three of The Bear premieres in less than a month, and in preparation, I’m rewatching it back from the beginning. This time, since I remember most of the plot, I’ve found myself distracted by the minute details I initially missed. Aside from the recipes and techniques I’m hoping to recreate in my own kitchen, I honed in on the kitchen products that  Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) uses in his sandwich shop.

As a shopping writer, I’m always curious about the cookware, appliances, and tools in professional chefs’ kitchens, so when I recently decided to replace my old vegetable peeler, I consulted Carmy for a recommendation by scanning through old episodes. Sure enough, in episode three of season one, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) can be seen peeling a large stack of carrots with the Food & Wine-recommended Kuhn Rikon Swiss peeler.

I’m averse to monotonous kitchen tasks, and for years I avoided peeling cucumbers before chopping them and made mashed potatoes with the skins still on. But I recently learned that certain foods, like roasted carrots, really do taste better with their skins off — leading me on a journey to find a vegetable peeler that’s easy to use and efficient.

Though it shows up on screen for just a few seconds, Edebiri’s peeler is undoubtedly a Kuhn Rikon — apparently a chef favorite both on TV and in real life. It’s a simple Y-shaped peeler with a comfortable handle made for both righties and lefties. At just 2.5 by 4.3 inches, the potato peeler is small enough to fit in virtually any drawer, and it’s as light as a feather, making it comfortable enough to take on the most tedious of tasks.

Despite its meager size, the peeler is surprisingly durable. The Kuhn RIkon will practically last forever if properly cared for. (Just don’t put it in the dishwasher or leave it soaking in the sink!) Plus, the brand offers a two-year warranty, just in case. One reviewer who has had their Kuhn Rikon for over 20 years said the peeler will “probably outlive them.”

The tool features three razor-sharp carbon steel blades that, according to shoppers, come sharper and stay sharper than any other peelers they’ve tried. “I have never had a veggie peeler that is this sharp and peels so efficiently,” wrote one shopper.

Best of all, this tool can do so much more than peel carrots and apples. The Y-peeler can slice up onions in seconds, shave cheese and chocolate, and create citrus garnishes for cocktails. A happy shopper called this $6 peeler “better than the expensive models,” and it isn’t hard to see why. The Kuhn Rikon is sharp, versatile, and almost certain to last a lifetime.
