Fast EV chargers now at Rancho Cucamonga sports facility

A fast-charging station for electric vehicles is up and running in Rancho Cucamonga, city officials announced.

Four 200 kilowatt DC Fast Charger electric vehicle chargers have been installed in the RC Sports Center’s parking lot, 8309 Rochester Ave., as part of the complex’s EV Charging Station Hub. EV CHARGER CABLE

“We are thrilled to unveil this resource, which marks a significant step toward our city’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy,” Fred Lyn, deputy director of the city’s Engineering Services Department, said in a statement. “By expanding our EV charging infrastructure, we are empowering residents to transition to electric vehicles to help us promote clean transportation.”

Officials said enhancing EV infrastructure in the city is a way of making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and convenient for residents.

“As the demand for electric vehicle charging increases … Rancho Cucamonga embraces the electric transportation mantra and reduces greenhouse gases,” according to a city statement.

The new high-power chargers are the fastest charging stations in the city, similar to the Tesla Supercharger sites at Victoria Gardens, 12505 N. Mainstreet, officials said. Current pricing is $0.35 per kilowatt, with chargers providing a significant amount of power in 20-30 minutes, which equates to about 100-200 miles in driving range, depending on the vehicle’s charging capabilities.

The new chargers work for most modern electric vehicles. Each station is equipped with two Combined Charging System, or CCS connectors, and a North American Charging Standard, or NACS connector will be added in the future, according to the city.

Chargers will be available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week on a first-come, first-served basis. Special events in the area could affect charger access, officials said.

The $1.2 million project was 35% funded with several grants, according to the city.

The charging stations at the sports center became available to the public on Jan. 29.

Officials said the EV charging project is in line with the city’s sustainability goals because it supports the use of emission-free vehicles. These charging stations will provide convenience for residents and visitors allowing them to charge their vehicles quickly and efficiently. As the demand for EV charging increases, the city may consider expanding the number of charging stations in the future.

“This EV Hub provides a state-of-the-art and fast-charging opportunity for EV drivers and complements the Epicenter Master Plan and the future buildout of this area,” officials said.
