Historic Castle Rock church wall collapses at Scileppi

DENVER (KDVR) — Part of a 136-year-old Castle Rock church-turned-restaurant collapsed on Wednesday as the building undergoes a major construction project.

Originally a Catholic church built in 1888, the stone building now hosts Scileppi’s at the Old Stone Church. The Italian restaurant is undergoing a 6,000-square-foot expansion, according to a post from the town of Castle Rock.

Scileppi’s said the restaurant would be closed Wednesday until further notice.

“We have all the proper personnel involved to ensure the safety of the customers we serve and those we employ. While we wait for more details, we want to thank our community for all the support and understanding,” Scileppi’s posted online.

Castle Rock Fire and Rescue were responding to the scene on Third Street.

The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church was the first built in Castle Rock, according to Scileppi’s.

The building was abandoned in 1966 after the parish built a new church east of town. In 1975, the church was converted into a restaurant, and the Scileppis took it over in 2018.
