Great for apartments or homes with less ample square footage, laundry centers offer a stacked washer and dryer unit, allowing you more space to fold or store things in your laundry room, kitchen, or closet. To be clear, laundry centers, although stacked, are single units, meaning you can't physically separate the washer from the dryer.
If you don't have to grow/go vertically and can't accommodate a stacked-style unit, a washer-dryer combo—about the size of a standard washing machine—is a great option.

For most homes, the LG WKEX200HBA (available at Home Depot) offers the best combination of helpful smart features, powerful cleaning, and a large capacity.
The app-controlled LG WashTower is a good-looking laundry center with a black steel finish. This high-efficiency washer/dryer combo has a large capacity (4.5 cu. ft.), meaning you can finish your laundry in fewer loads. AI technology suggests optimal wash and dry settings. Using the ThinQ app, you can control your laundry remotely, and ThinQ Care sends maintenance tips and alerts about your laundry center’s performance.
With a speed wash option for 15-minute cycles, the LG WashTower is said to be perfect for families. One couple even bought two: one for their summer house and a second for their primary residence. While this laundry center is considered quiet and easy to use, the drying monitor sounds pretty lackluster. The LG WashTower is Energy Star certified and AAFA Certified—so you won’t have to worry about dust or particles floating around—and is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

The Electrolux ELTE7600AT Laundry Tower is a good laundry center, no question. This high-end laundry appliance comes loaded with a beautiful, full-size washer and dryer.
With super-powered cleaning modes that play rough and fast with clothing but offer superior dirt-busting, to a delicate cycle that’s more sensitive than average, this Electrolux washer and dryer has a high skill-ceiling, with different modes for different needs. However, some of these features are less automatic than other machines.
Predictive Dry and Luxcare mean that machine learning will monitor your dryer loads to ensure your clothing isn’t damaged, and the SmartBoost system premixes detergent for a more measured spread throughout your load. The machine also comes with steam capabilities that sanitize and refresh.
The unit’s lint trap does have some trouble with down, and its powerful (though notably rough) 15-minute dry cycle reminded our reviewers of a jet engine.
However, this high-end laundry center is a great pick for homes with varied needs. If you’re the type of person who wants an appliance that you can use for lots of different ends, then this is the one.

Compact and affordable, this laundry center from GE is pretty small. Eleven wash cycles handle various fabrics and amounts of soiling, and six wash and rinse temperatures ensure the right settings for all your clothes. This laundry center also sports straightforward controls, making it easier to operate than some others.
Auto-load sensing automatically measures the load size and adds just the right amount of water to the washing machine, and the spin cycle is said to be so good that clothes are nearly dry when it’s time to go into the dryer, decreasing the dry time considerably. While this laundry center is smaller, that also means that it’s better for small loads and may not be a good fit for larger families or people who tend to wash large loads.
Can’t handle larger loads
With eleven wash cycles, ten dryer cycles, and three wash and dry temperatures, this laundry center from Frigidaire is sure to stand up to anything you throw at it. Quick wash and dry cycles are available, so doing laundry in a rush is a non-issue. And while a built-in bleach dispenser is included in the unit, there’s unfortunately no fabric-softener dispenser.
The MaxFill setting on the Frigidaire gives you the option to use the maximum water level for the selected cycles, but this might mean that it uses more water than others overall. A one-year warranty is included with the purchase for any issues that may arise.
While this laundry center from Whirlpool isn’t a high-efficiency duo option, it comes at a good price and offers a lot of capabilities. A dual-action agitator works to wash clothes in one of nine wash cycles, with five wash and rinse temperatures, and the lid-lock indicator ensures safety while the washer is in use.
Four drying cycles with two dry-temperature options are good when drying different types of garments, and a tumble press feature works to reduce wrinkles from items once the sensor indicates they’re finished drying. The dryer is said to perform well, but it might also be a little loud despite the advertised “vibration reduction” feature.

Laundry centers may look like stacked washer and dryer sets. However, the difference is that they are connected and integrated. To use a stacked washer and dryer set, you might have to stand on a stool to control the upper unit, but not so here. Because they're connected, laundry centers usually provide control panels at an easy-to-reach level between the two units.
Most importantly, this vertical layout saves space. Laundry centers have the footprint of one laundry appliance, so users save area.
Laundry centers and washer-dryer combos are both space savers, but there are major differences between them. Laundry centers generally stack a dryer on top of a washer in one integrated unit. Because of this, a laundry center has the footprint of one appliance but is much taller, but they perform similar to traditional American washers and dryers.
On the other hand, washer-dryer combos combine washing and drying in one box. Rather than asking you to move your laundry from the washer to the dryer, combo units begin to dry as soon as the washing is done.
Combo units are also often ventless, using condenser drying or heat pumps to remove water from the load. Because of this, washer-dryer combos are some of the most compact and efficient laundry units around and often don't need a hole in the wall to blow hot air out of. The downside is that they often take longer to complete loads, have smaller capacities, and often leave laundry feeling damper to the touch than most Americans are accustomed to.
