LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The long stretch of heat may be wearing on you but it can also take a toll on your car. The high won’t kill your car battery but because of evaporation, you might lose some vital car battery fluids. Liskey’s Auto in Lansing tells News 10, the best thing people can do is get ahead of any car problems so you don’t end up on the side of the road in this heat.
“Heat affects a car just like the cold. Batteries, starters, alternators, they don’t like the heat, the same way they don’t like the cold. We do see a lot of those failures this time of year when we see these first couple of heat waves come through,” said Jerry Carpenter, the owner of Liskey’s Auto and Truck Service in Lansing. To avoid being stranded, people should be proactive about getting their vehicles serviced and replacing car parts like your battery or air conditioning.
“No one’s needed air conditioning... now all of a sudden, it’s nice and humid, you turn on the air and it’s not blowing the air as efficiently as they think it should. When it gets warm like this, it’s important to make sure the air conditioning is working well,” said Carpenter.
During heat waves, you’ll likely hear how the high heat is going to drain your car battery but Carpenter said, ”That’s a myth, we don’t really see that a whole lot of that, there’s no excessive draw. The cold probably hurts the battery more than the warm but if you get a battery that’s marginal, that’s on its way out, it’ll show signs when it gets this hot.”
When you get in your car it’s best to start it up and wait a couple minutes before pulling off. Carpenter says to roll down your window until you feel cold air in the vents and setting your air to “circulate” should help you stay cool.
