On February 23, AGRR/glassBYTEs confirmed that Safelite bought Tri State Auto Glass. That morning, a local source saw Safelite trucks and signage at one Tri State location.
Another source in the area that prefers to remain anonymous said he is surprised that Safelite purchased Tri State.
“It seemed like a weird buy for Safelite,” he said.
According to the source, Tri State’s business was primarily larger vehicles such as RVs, buses and heavy trucks, as well as cut glass for heavy equipment and machinery.
“I think a lot of (Tri State’s) customers are going to be displaced,” he said.
Tri State Auto Glass was founded in 1997 in Greenville, South Carolina, and had locations in Taylors, South Carolina; Asheville, North Carolina and Hickory, North Carolina.
Safelite’s expansion in the Carolinas doesn’t phase the source. He sees it as fewer individual companies in the area to compete with.
“The fewer people there are to compete with, for me, the better,” he said.
Earlier in 2024 on January 5, Safelite purchased New Hampshire-based Thompson Auto Glass, which had three locations in Windham, New Hampshire; Brockton, Massachusetts; and Rocky Hill, Connecticut (see related story above).
In 2023, Safelite bought eight auto glass companies, starting with Missouri-based Mark’s Mobile Glass in March and ending with Waco, Texas-based Freddy’s Glass in December.
