Trenton smokestacks avoid wrecking ball as DTE pulls plug on demolition plan – The News Herald

People actually had spots picked out to watch the demolition of the candy cane-like smokestacks at the Trenton Channel Power Plant go down Friday, but they will have to wait.

According to DTE Energy, the historic demolition has been postponed and will be rescheduled.

The News-Herald Newspapers could not confirm a reschedule date.

The facility idled two years ago and talks of knocking the smokestacks down and redeveloping the area picked up ever since. For now, plans for phase two of the demolition project remain set for May 17.

The date for the demolition was announced earlier this year. At that time, DTE Energy said the dates for both phases could change depending on weather conditions.

It is not yet clear if weather played a factor in the postponement of Friday’s plan, but any number of variables could have come into play.

After serving the Downriver communities for nearly 100 years, some in the community were looking forward to seeing history in the making, and others had planned to watch, with a bit of sadness, to see the major landmark leveled on the landscape.
