Noodle Recall Update as FDA Sets Highest Risk Level - Newsweek

The recall of instant noodle products found to contain a major allergen has been reclassified under health guidelines.

In May, Sun Noodle, a food manufacturer in Hawaii, voluntarily recalled its S&S Cup Saimin—Noodles With Soup & Garnishes because of the undeclared presence of egg, a major allergen. The recall has now been designated as a Class I by the Food and Drug Administration, the most serious type of recall. Previously, the recall was not under any of the FDA's three classification levels.

According to the FDA website, a Class I recall is issued when there is a "reasonable probability" that use of or exposure to a product could "cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

A Class II recall is considered "a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." A less serious Class III recall is designated when the product in question is considered unlikely to cause any "adverse health consequences" once consumed or used.

Products produced and sold this year and last year are included in the recall:

A spokesperson for Sun Noodle previously told Newsweek via email that the "egg white powder ingredient is limited to the Fish Cake within this (frozen) soup and noodle cup and this product has very limited distribution."

In the original news release, the manufacturer said consumers who had purchased the S&S Cup Saimin should "return it to the place of purchase for a full refund."

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may cause and assure our customers that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and quality of our products," the statement continued.

Eggs are one of the nine major allergens identified by the FDA. The other eight major food allergens designated by the FDA are milk, soybeans, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and sesame.

Food allergies often lead to uncomfortable symptoms that can sometimes result in serious illness. The agency warns that the consumption of these foods by those with allergies poses a "risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction."

According to the FDA, food-allergy reactions can lead to hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and coughing or wheezing. More serious symptoms of an allergic reaction—known as anaphylaxis—can include swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness, all of which are considered medical emergencies.
