INDIANAPOLIS – In this week’s Home Zone, we’re looking at some basic Home Hacks to simplify your life.

Ever felt like your home’s temperature just won’t cooperate? Well, we’ve got some tips to help you tame that unruly heat or frosty AC.

Sure, cleaning filters and maintaining your furnace are crucial steps, but don’t overlook the simple solutions. Ever tried closing off a vent with register covers that come with your home? They are not always effective as air often still passes by the closed fins.

Instead, if you have metal registers, consider magnetic covers. They seal tight and stay put, even when your vents are wide open. They are strong enough to even hold onto ceiling registers and come in a variety of colors.

For a more permanent fix, seal off the bottom with specialized duct tape. No more unwanted drafts! Speaking of HVAC tape, use it or a mastic designed for duct work to seal off any gaps in your duct work.

Feeling cramped by clutter in your recycling bins? Let’s clear the air and make room.

Those empty water bottles may be recyclable, but they sure hog up space in your bin. Here’s a hack: flatten them and roll them up like toothpaste tubes, then secure the cap tightly so they don’t expand. Voila! More room for other recyclables, and less clutter in your trash.

I was able to fit maybe a dozen water bottles in a small, under sink recycling bin before flattening them. Afterward, I could fit 50!

Don’t forget about your fridge–it needs some love, too. Swap out that water filter every six months (unless your fridge kindly reminds you sooner).

In most cases, it’s as easy as a twist and pull, with a towel handy for any drips. Then put a new filter back in, by pushing in the filter and twisting it the opposite way you got it out. Some refrigerators have their filter simply push in without any turning.

Ah, the age-old dilemma: How to pop open a 12-pack because if you watch YouTube, there are many methods to doing this! According to the manufacturer, you’re supposed to open from the perforated part which exposes one can at a time. But why not flex your skills and crack the case in half right where the built-in handle is?

Because it’s already perforated in that area, it’s weak. Just grab each end and quickly snap it in the middle like you would a stick. It should open in the middle, giving you two sides to access at once, with four cans available.

So there you have it—home hacks to simplify your life and space, one simple solution at a time. Cheers to making life a little easier!
