Thankfully, Camilla was on hand to calm him down.
King Charles has basically seen it all: he's crisscrossed the world, has met with heads of state, and has lived a life that includes foraging for mushrooms at the royal country estate. However, even with all of that, it appears that there's one place he doesn't often frequent: the kitchen. In Tom Bower's biography Rebel Prince, which was later republished as Rebel King: The Making of a Monarch, the author detailed a situation in which Charles was startled by the sight of plastic wrap (aka Saran wrap or cling film, depending on where you live). According to Bower, when Charles saw a piece of plastic wrap for the first time, he "trembled."
"He walked into the dining room and shrieked," the author explained. "Fearing the worst, Camilla dashed in after him. ‘What’s this?’ asked her husband, pointing at the food."
"'It's cling film, darling," she answered in what may be one of the most upstairs-downstairs moments regarding the royal family, ever.
The anecdote is making headlines again as Charles's attitudes towards food were revealed in Camilla's son's new cookbook, Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes From Queen Victoria to Charles III. In the new release, Tom Parker Bowles shared that the king and queen are competitive mushroom foragers and that the monarch hates food waste and encourages the royal cooks to reimagine leftovers into new dishes.
Stretch Film In a column for the Daily Mail, Tom called out the king as "a true food hero" and pointed to his passion for "sustainable agriculture," saying, "there is no waste at his table."
