GLOCESTER – The Purple Cat trolley donated to Glocester will soon be moved to school property as plans move forward on the town’s renovation of it.
Public Works Director Gary Treml said he was able to find a spot for the trolley behind Ponaganset Middle School.
In February, the owner of the Purple Cat redevelopment, Al Costantino, donated the trolley, which used to house the Purple Cat Restaurant. Costantino planned on renovating the trolley, but said he realized he would not have enough time.
Treml said he is in contract with school officials and they agreed to the location. Treml said Costantino agreed to provide transportation and a crane to move the trolley. Treml said he will use items from the DPW yard to create piers for the trolley to sit on.
Supt. Renee Palazzo said everyone is excited to restore and bring the trolley back to life. She said students in Ponaganset’s construction program will work on the trolley, but stated that there are many steps that need to take place first.
Palazzo said she will lean on the Town Council for support to get initial work done on the trolley.
Additionally, a local company will wrap the trolley for free, accoridng to Town Councilor William Worthy.
Last Thursday, the Town Council heard an update on the plans to relocate the trolley to town property. Councilor Stephen Arnold said the situation is a tricky one. He said everyone wants to preserve the trolley.
Arnold said the council talked about the donation for a “great deal of time,” with several options. He said things will take time, and that renovation projects such as these cost a lot of money.
“Everyone here sees an opportunity to do something really cool. And you know, in a perfect world the kids are involved and you know, maybe there’s a grant out there,” Arnold said.
Arnold said the town needs to work out issues of ownership to cover any liability on the trolley. He said there is more to break down before the town works to preserve the trolley. While the town does not yet own the trolley, he said, Costantino will gladly sign it over.
“I think everybody’s end goal is to preserve it and do something really special with it down the road,” Arnold said.
