The UBI’s Palod branch runs on a premises rented out by one Sufiya Kagzi at Palod village near Kim Cross road. The office of the marble polishing unit is owned by Kagzi, a resident of Kim.
Sources said that on Monday night, miscreants allegedly broke open the main door of the office to make a large hole in the wall and entered the bank. The accused allegedly broke open six bank lockers, stole cash, jewellery, and other valuable items, and decamped.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when the bank manager Alok Kumar (48), a resident of Kamrej, turned up at the bank and learnt about the theft. He immediately called up Kosamba police.
Hitesh Joyser, Superintendent of Police, Surat, and other police officers reached the spot.
With the help of bank officials, a police team tried to identify the account holders. Some of the holders are out of town, said Kosamba police.
Police sources said that from the spot, they found cucumbers, apple pieces, an iron bar cutter machine, and a glass lying on the sofa set inside the bank. The police said they suspect that there might have been more than three people who were “tired and hungry after their hard work”.
Police sources said that three bank lockers were empty while one of the locker owners, identified as Dhansukh Ahir, alleged in his statement that Rs 9 lakh and 45 tolas of gold jewellery worth Rs. 31.36 lakh were stolen from his locker.
Joyser said, “We are questioning labourers working in the marble polishing unit of Kagzi. There is no CCTV footage and we are using all our techniques to identify the suspects. At present, we don’t know how many suspects there were. We suspect some known person was involved in the theft, as he would have been aware that the bank and marble polishing unit have a common wall.”
“The figure of the amount stolen may rise in the coming days once the holders of the two lockers return,” he added.
Kumar has lodged a complaint with the Kosamba police station under the BNS Act Sections 305 (a) (theft in a dwelling house) 324 (5) (intent to cause, or knowing that he is likely to cause, wrongful loss or damage to the public or to any person, or causes destruction of any property), and 331(4) (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night to commit of an offence), against unknown persons.

England captain Jos Buttler agrees with the growing consensus that ODIs are losing relevance and facing an uncertain future. He believes the format has been pushed to the margins, with T20 cricket dominating the sport's calendar. While the men's Cricket World Cup is likely to continue, Buttler questions how long it will survive.
