REVIEW: Varusteleka Särmä TST L4 Combat Trousers

Varusteleka is from Finland. See, forests, few people, good camo. Some time ago, we pointed you to the Särmä TST L4 combat trousers from the Finnish manufacturer Varusteleka. This confirms, Finland has more than just the Leningrad Cowboys and a lot of good Black Death Metal to export. The Särmä TST L4 is now available and we have been wearing it in the summer and examined it in detail.

Midsummer temperatures beyond the forest: the 30°C in these pants feel hot. At times when man prefers shorts to combat trousers, the Särmä TST L4 is a challenge like a Finnish sauna. You should probably try it with a Finnish vodka infusion. The Nordic forest fighter relies on quality, which is extremely noticeable in the fabric quality. If something happens: you'll probably rot before the pants do. But that's just a feeling: The pants - here from the front - display the Finnish M05 camouflage, rarely seen with us. The back of the Särmä TST L4 combat trousers is simple. Thigh pockets and knee adjustments are visible.

The 50mm wide belt loops are happy to accommodate any kind of belt. The two loops on the side and front are equipped with an additional small loop for lanyards or carabiners. This allows you to secure your equipment very well against loss. In the forest, it's hard to find things again.

If you wonder why the pants look so wrinkled, we used the Velcro adjustment. Normally we wear a jeans size 33, which is at the lower end of "Large" in Varusteleka's size chart and not, as usual, at the higher end of "Medium". Despite the larger size, the pants fit very well.

What is somewhat unusual about the Särmä TST L4 combat trousers is that they reach just above the belly button with the waistband. This may be a bit unusual at first, but it proves to be very good in use, as the Battle Belt on the hips does not overlap with the normal belt. This results in minimizing those otherwise really painful pressure points over time. And yes, we are very sensitive. However, the high waistband has a disadvantage: those with a belly will not be happy with the pants. Finland loves sporty soldiers.

The waistband is closed with a slotted button and zipper, all very classic.

The material of the Särmä TST L4 combat trousers is something very special, namely a 60/40 cotton/polyester blend. The polyester is a special spiral fiber polyester that allows for stretching. This allows the pants, which are surely also inspired by Crye Pants, to be made without stretch fabric elements. The fabric is - as mentioned above - very dense, very strong, very durable, and warm.

Here the proof of flexibility. The morning yoga routine is no problem in these pants. The waistband stays where it's supposed to.

The pants pockets are generously sized to allow easy access with gloves. Since Finns wear gloves almost all year round, this is very important. No reinforcements are provided for the knife clip, but so far, we have not observed any wear and tear. See our arguments for high fabric quality ...

The side thigh pockets are equipped with Velcro and buttons. So there's something for everyone's taste.
