BALTIMORE -- Two people, one of them a child, died in a crash involving four cars Wednesday morning in Northeast Baltimore, the Baltimore City Fire Department said.
Units responded around 7:30 a.m. to the crash at the 3500 block of Belair Road, BCFD spokesperson Kevin Cartwright said. Investigators believe one vehicle struck three others in the crash, and speed was a factor.
Sharon Worsham, 68, and 9-year-old Xavier Dukes were pronounced dead at the scene, Cartwright said. A third child was in the same car, but their condition was unclear.
The child who did not survive was pulled from the car by a pastor from a nearby church, Cartwright said.
Jerome McFadden first walked up to the crash when this happened.
"I saw one gentleman pulling somebody out of the car and when I saw that, I knew the person was gone," McFadden said. "I just ran back home, tears were in my eyes, [I saw the victim] was a child. I couldn't deal with that."
Three more people were transported to area hospitals, but the severity of their injuries was not immediately clear.
Neighbors who live by the crash tell WJZ it's scary to see something like this because kids often walk along this part of Belair Road.
"A lot of kids coming across [the street] in the morning, walking to the school down the street," said Eric Thompson.
Thompson adds he hopes this tragedy serves as a wake up call for drivers to slow down.
"Especially early in the morning," he said. "Safety for yourself, safety for the public, safety for the children. It's just ridiciulous."
Baltimore Police are investigating the crash.
