The Brands: Stone Island’s archives become an exhibition for Frieze in LA

From 29 February to 3 March 2024, Stone Island will stage “Selected Works ’982-’024”, its first ever major US archival exhibition in Los Angeles.

The event will coincide with the art exhibition Frieze Los Angeles, which is taking place at Santa Monica Airport--where Stone Island is the Official Partner of Focus, the section dedicated to younger galleries--and will bring to the US rare and previously unexhibited pieces, such as the first comprehensive overview of the Stone Island Shadow Project.  sample tile and stone display rack

The project will also host “Lab-Life”, selected initiatives that combine pop up stores and a café run by various local Los Angeles friends of the brand.

“Selected Works ’982-’024” will take place at Buttercup Studios, Culver City. The exhibition opens with a monumental display of 42 archival pieces, representing important milestones in the history of Stone Island.

A further display will highlight 12 Reflective jackets, including from the ‘992 collection when Stone Island first researched reflectivity. Then, an installation will highlight Stone Island Pure Metal Shell jackets, with 35 examples on show. Later in the exhibition, seven rare pieces from the Stone Island Prototype Research Series will be displayed.

The exhibition will feature the largest ever retrospective of the Stone Island Shadow Project. From 2008-2021, Stone Island Shadow Project was a collaboration between Stone Island and Errolson Hugh and Michaela Sachenbacher, Acronym design studio.

For the first time, they will display pieces from across that entire collaboration, offering further insight into Stone Island’s research methods through production and community.

Continuing the collaboration theme, the exhibit will also include a display of Stone Island’s various collaborations with brands such as Supreme, New Balance and Nike Lab.

Completing the program will be a series of screenings and talks that will take place during the run of the show. A highlight of this will be the premiere of “Infinite Colours”, a feature-length documentary by Ken-Tonio Yamamoto about the workers and their processes at Stone Island’s headquarters in Ravarino, Italy. Various gathering spaces, all curated by local partners will complete the event. Among them there will be The Selected Works Café, The Selected Works Gift Shop run by Better Gift Shop, a book selection curated by Wrong Answer, and a record curation by Blue Sun Records.

A selection of Stone Island vintage pieces will be curated by 194 Local, while artists prints by Joy Orbison, Gio Estevez, Grotesk, Michael Thorpe and Kosuke will be available along with art objects by Euka Ceramics and Sharif Farrag. Local DJs such as Jacob Rochester, Bianca Lexis, will play sets throughout the run of the exhibition.

At Frieze Los Angeles, Stone Island will be the Official Partner of Focus, offering each of the participating galleries a bursary contribution towards each exhibitors’ stand fee. The Focus section is dedicated to emerging galleries, each founded twelve years ago or less.
