Where to buy tiles – the best tile brands in the UK

The most inspiring and original tiles to shop

Choosing tiles can be a deceptively difficult task – the variety of styles, colours, shapes and finishes available can be both inspiring and totally overwhelming. tiles bathroom

While there are practical considerations like ease of cleaning, durability and cost – some can be eye-watering – you'll have a lot more fun mulling over colour combinations and patterns, all the creative ways in which you can lay tiles across walls and floors, and the chalky, silky, rough and glazed finishes available.

There are a number of brilliant high street and independent tile brands in the UK full of inspiration, and here we look at 13 of the best.

Best for: Colour and pattern

Bert & May are a real go-to for the best quality tiles with clever colour combinations and patterns that run the gamut from lilac marble metro tiles (a favourite), to rich bejmat tiles that are handmade in Morocco.

A reliable retailer for all things home improvement. We're entirely partial to our own Country Living collection of tiles at Homebase, which are perfect for country homes. These Starry Skies are a favourite for their blush pink colour and chalky encaustic effect.

Balineum tiles are nothing short of exquisite. This collection is by British artist Fee Greening, with 12 tile designs that draw on Greening’s original ink and watercolour illustrations. The very best choice for an interesting splashback or decadent bathroom.

Fired Earth stock a lot of the best tile brands in the UK, and their collaborations are second to none – this checkerboard tile is the work of interior design veteran Nina Campbell. A must for anyone with a love of colour, they have a riot of rainbow shades, and some really unique shapes too.

Artisans of Devizes is a great choice if you're shopping for floor tiles. There are plenty of weathered stone floor tiles, which are perfect for a country kitchen, and so too are the extra large marble-effect porcelain tiles that make cleaning totally effortless.

This is probably the most fun you'll have shopping for tiles. Claybrook Studio have a wonderfuls election of Zellige-like glazed tiles in bright colourways, lots of 3D surfaces – the fluted and convex designs are really something – as well as porcelains that replicate stone and natural travertine.

We would love to have a whole room covered in Ca'Pietra's illustrated tiles, but on a smaller scale they make a really sweet splashback. There's a real sense of luxury to the whole collection, and some really unique patterns and playful motifs.

Otto Tiles is one for the colour lovers. Their collection of Zellige tiles is second to none – each is hand-chiselled, dried and kiln fired before an enamel glaze is applied by hand. And in true Zellige tradition, the glazed colours are wonderfully bright and enticing.

Baked Tile Co. create ready-made murals that can stretch over an entire wall should you wish to create a real feature. We're really taken with this bright tropical motif, but there are equally more subtle versions in grainy pale blues and the softest natural green.

There is a small but mighty collection of hand-crafted nineteenth century reproductions at House of Hackney that celebrate Britain’s long history of decorative crafts. The tiles are crafted by world renowned makers, Craven Dunnill Jackfield, in the oldest surviving tile factory in the world.

We would head straight to Mandarin Stone if we fancied a glossy bottle green bathroom or a dramatic onyx-effect amethyst floor. It is really the place for big statements and decadent finishing touches.

Best for: Variety and affordability

You really can't beat Original Style for sheer variety. You can visit them for everything from affordable bathroom tiles in a fizzy sherbet pink, to large format stones for a kitchen floor and sweet tiles adorned with hand-painted fruit.

Best for: Tiles you won't find elsewhere

Maitland and Poate have the most unbelievable collection of reclaimed and hand-painted tiles, with colour combinations and patterns we've never seen elsewhere. These are real standout pieces, so be bold – an entire small bathroom covered floor to ceiling would look so striking.
