When planning our trip for Sick Week 2024, we knew we’d be exploring areas all throughout central Florida. We figured, rather than simply hop city to city, let’s see what engine shops we can visit in an effort to showcase what they have going on. First on the list was JBR Engines in Plant City, FL, just outside of the Bradenton area. Piston rod stuffing box

We’ve known shop owner Jose Bello for a few years, and well before that, we knew his shop was one of the top shops in the Honda and import engine scene. After getting a full tour of the JBR Engines facility, Jose took us into the engine assembly room where an all-billet K24 2.2L Honda engine was getting prepped to become a world beater. He was kind enough to give us the full details of the engine.

“This is actually for a 5-second four-cylinder car in the quarter mile,” Bello says. “This is his engine for 2024. We start with a Bullet billet K-series K24 deck height block, which we machine. We bore it, hone it and set it up for fire rings that Bullet makes. We also do all the clearancing and everything to get it set up. Then, we’ve got a Callies 2.2L billet crank, R&R connecting rods, Diamond pistons, Trend wrist pins, and all the nice stuff.”

The engine also features a billet Honda cylinder head, which gets ported in-house and helps the engine make 1,800-2,000 horsepower on the track, according to Jose. As for the 2.2L size of the engine, Jose says that was done for a specific purpose.

“With the crankshafts that are available with the K24, the journals are kind of narrow, so we’re just looking for a little more support on the rod journal,” he says. “Then, destroking it we’ll get a little more out of the power band and it just works.”

While the billet cylinder head gets ported in-house, JBR also dropped some nice valvetrain goodies into it with custom Ferrea valves, Ferrea 150-lb. springs and a Drag Cartel camshaft. Additionally, the engine gets 75-80-lbs. of boost thanks to being turbocharged.

“In the quarter mile, the customer’s personal best is 5.867 at 233 mph, if I’m not mistaken,” Bello says.

An engine like this also runs a Peterson dry sump oiling system. While the customer is already one of the fastest out there in a Honda, this new billet K24 2.2L build is sure to up the ante even further!

Ken Lazzeri, head engine builder for Indy Cylinder Head, has helped build over 5,000 Hemi engines during the life of the Mopar component manufacturer’s business. We were pumped to get time with him to discuss the details of this 588 cid supercharged Hemi engine for bracket racing. Check it out!

We’ve been following Indy Cylinder Head and the engine work of Ken Lazzeri for a long while now. The company, which specializes in performance components such as intake manifolds, cylinder heads, and engine blocks, does so specifically for the Mopar crowd, and Ken’s engine work follows right behind with some amazing examples of Hemi horsepower.

This 2016 Subaru STi, which features an all-billet EJ 2.5L engine, was built to showcase what Kaiju Motorsports is capable of. Not only does it look great, but all expectation is that it performs well too. Check it out!

Noonan Race Engineering is well-known for its V8 engine platforms, but the shop has now dipped its toe into the 4-cylinder world with a billet K24 Honda engine. The objective – huge horsepower, while keeping factory creature comforts. Check it out!

One of the first 5.000″ bore space big block Chevy engines that Visner Engine Development has come out with in this new design, this billet engine was built by Nick Bacalis of Bullet Racing Engines for a 1971 C10 belonging to Michael Rieck. Check out what 4,000-plus horsepower looks like!

At ACE Racing Engines, Stefan Rossi’s and Laura Pugh’s hard work has been paying off in the form of increased awareness and business, a new shop space out in California, and best of all, success on the track from numerous customers. Check out this excellent example of a maximum effort, billet LS engine for a drag-and-drive application.

Maybe it was the level of detailing and polish? Maybe it was the giant turbo? Maybe it was the size and green color? Maybe it was just because this is an awesome Light Pro Stock 540 cid small block John Deere engine, so we stopped to find out more about the build done by VG Motorsports!

During our time at Sick Week 2024, we took a detour from the route on our way to Bradenton to stop in and visit JBR Engines and owner Jose Bello. This shop specializes in import cylinder head and engine work, primarily the Honda platform, and they do a killer job with the records to prove

Fast Forward Race Engines and shop owners Joe and Gina Irwin have been making big horsepower and well-performing engines for quite some time. Recently, the shop’s Coyote engine program has been gaining notoriety thanks to the work the shop does in conjunction with Brett LaSala and his record-setting Snot Rocket Mustang.
