We've gobbled up all the rumors and leaks about the Galaxy S5 eagerly, but the latest rumor is one that will probably turn off a lot of folks. According to the Korean media, Samsung is considering using PLS LCD displays on next year flagships like the Galaxy S5 and Note 4, in order to reduce production costs by almost 20 percent. Samsung already uses PLS LCDs for its tablets, such as the Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Note 10.1, and the company is now considering adopting the technology for its phones as well.
Of course, LCD displays also have other advantages, such as more natural colors and lesser battery drain in usage scenarios such as browsing, but the move would come at quite the odd time. With the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung's AMOLED panels have reached a stage where you can get a display experience that matches that of the best LCD displays, while retaining OLED benefits such as true blacks; OLED screens have also been one of the major selling points of the Galaxy line of flagships, another factor that would make the move to LCD displays a bad decision for the company.
However, Samsung recently said it is ready to produce Super AMOLED panels with 2k resolution, so this is a rumor that will likely be proven wrong when Samsung announces the Galaxy S5. Furthermore, rumors of Samsung ditching AMOLED displays crop up almost every year, so we'll just file this one away in the “never to come true” section of our rumor cabinet.
What do you guys think? Would you be okay with LCD displays on the Galaxy S5 and/or Note 4, or would you prefer if Samsung offered variants with both LCD and AMOLED displays?
