What happened: Resident Kevin Harley voiced concern about the noise at the pickleball courts at Community Park on Pine Street — not the volume, but the frequency.

Quotable: “We love all the activity in the park and the pickleball courts were a good use of the space,” he said.

More: But an “unintended consequence” of the courts is the “nonstop noise” during park hours, he said. He said it’s not the decibel level, but the constant pop of the ball on the paddles that’s the problem. Harley said he’d appreciate the council “including us (neighbors) in the solutions.” Harley would prefer officials call them on the phone to discuss their concerns, so residents do not have to attend and speak at public meetings, he said.

Background: At past meetings, residents have also lamented the frequency of pickleball and hours of play. Council has said it will look into ways to mitigate the sound; it cannot legally restrict hours for pickleball players within open park hours.

What’s new: The borough is looking into an economical sound barrier with wind slits to help deaden the sound of pickleball, while allowing weather forces to pass through it, Adam Gochnauer, pro-tempore member, said.

Quotable: “It’s worth a shot,” he said.

Natural solution: With summer winding down and eight pickleball courts to open soon in Manheim Township, this problem should lessen, Gochnauer added.

Quotable: “I have great confidence you guys (borough council) will work with us to come up with a solution to benefit the neighbors and the players,” Harley said.

Communication: The borough will use East Petersburg fire company’s Facebook page to communicate urgent information in an emergency to residents, rather than “reinventing the wheel” with a new page, Violet DeStefano, emergency management coordinator, announced.

Upcoming meetings: Council will hold its next committee meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 and next council meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 1.
