How to use a darning loom for beginners

Visible mending is a great way to get into repairing your own clothes – and a darning loom is a brilliant piece of kit to be able to do it.

But if you haven't used a darning loom before, don't worry – we'll talk you through how to use a darning loom, what fabrics you can use it on and the best darning looms to buy now.

You'll be repairing all your clothes before you know it!

A darning loom is a handheld weaving device, which allows you to create coloured patches over your clothes. Darning looms are also known by their vintage brand name, Speedweve, the name of the original creators of the product.

You can use a darning loom to create patches over holes in clothes, blankets and other household objects made from soft textiles.

To work your darning loom, you first place it over the patch of fabric that you'll be covering – or over the hole in the garment that you'd like to mend.

Each darning loom has a number of hooks, around which yarn is threaded. They then create a miniature loom, through which yarn can be threaded in the opposite direction to the yarn on the hooks.

You can work different coloured yarns through the weave to create a colourful patch, or a single colour to create one block patch.

You should always opt for a yarn that is durable and strong for your darning loom – you need it to withstand being tightly weaved through the device.

There are so many fabrics which your darning loom will work brilliantly on. You can use it to mend holes or blemishes on cotton, denim, linen and even lightweight knitwear.

It can be difficult to choose the best darning loom to buy – so we've rounded up our favourites available to buy now. Generally, you won't have to spend more than £20 on your darning loom, making it a great craft purchase to buy on a budget.
