Good oral sex is often the fastest and most reliable way to reach the big O. Other times, a little oral exploration gets you primed for the main event. But there are times when you may want to get some wet and wild action when you're flying solo. This is where the wonderful world of oral sex toys comes in handy.
“Oral sex toys simulate the sensations of oral sex – licking, flicking and sucking – to provide or increase sexual pleasure, and they can prolong and enhance stimulation," explains Joe Kort, Ph.D., LMSW, founding director of The Center for Relationship and Sexual Health in Royal Oak, Michigan. “You can use an oral sex toy while masturbating, during sex or foreplay, and they can help you explore new fantasies and desires.”
You don't have to experience an orgasm to have satisfying sex, but reaching a climax with or without an oral sex toy can give you a lift both physically and mentally. “When you orgasm, happy hormones are released, and it’s also stress-relieving and contributes to your sexual confidence and boosts your sexual desire, which is great for your personal sense of sexual self as well as the sex life with your partner," says sex and relationship expert Tara Suwinyattichaiporn, Ph.D., professor of relational and sexual communication at California State University Fullerton and host of the Luvbites by Dr. Tara Podcast.
If it’s that titillating tongue action that you’re craving, don’t mess around with suction or air or your standard vibrator — jump straight into the action with the LELO ORA 3, which features “ergonomically perfected pleasure nodes” to deliver the tongue-like feeling your clitoris desires. This latest model provides 12 pleasure modes, from gentle to “oh wow” so you can bring yourself to ultimate satisfaction.
REVIEW: “I love this. It’s high quality and so fun to use. It does mimic oral, and the added variations of vibrations and speeds make this very pleasurable. I love it solo, and my partner and I love it together. I highly recommend!”
This artificial tongue is closer in size, shape and feel (reviewers rave that it’s “squishy”) than some others, so this toy may match the sensations that you’re busy imagining. This also means that you have more flexibility when it comes to mimicking the oral sex motions that bring you pleasure and orgasm, so use it outside on your clit or slide it in for soft stroking.
REVIEW: “Really unique idea, I’ve been wanting something like this. The tongue is such a soft squishy material, really feels good. If you want more licking but can't find a tongue to do it, now you can just order one!”
Consider this toy from female-founded sex toy company Dame your intro to clitoral suckers. It forms a gentle suction around your clitoris and blows air with each pulse to excite. You can choose from five intensity levels and five pattern modes, so you won’t find yourself at your peak before you’ve had a chance to play around — but you’ll eventually feel too good to not get there!
“Solo play allows for leaning into pleasure without having to think about anything else. It’s a good opportunity to find out for yourself what your pleasure potential is and how you get there. This can be really empowering,” explains Rachel Zar, LMFT, CST, a relationship and sex therapist at Spark Chicago Therapy and Northwestern Medicine Center for Sexual Medicine & Menopause.
REVIEW: “This is the best thing ever. It is consistent, easy to hold, easy to use, AND NEVER DISAPPOINTS! I highly recommend for solo play.”
“This clitoral stimulator can be a great choice for women. It is velvety smooth to the touch, quiet and uses pulsating air to excite while allowing you to mix up the intensity and stimulation,” Kort says.
Play around with different air pressures (instead of straight contact vibration) to see what gets you to the finish, and if you’re feeling extra wild, turn on autopilot — it’ll cycle through the 12 different intensity levels for a spicy surprise. You can also feel comfortable knowing your privacy is top of mind — it features Smart Silence Technology, meaning your toy only turns on when it touches your skin.
“The Fun Factory Volta mimics the flickering of a human tongue. It features two soft tongue-like prongs to stimulate,” Kort says. A combo of vibration and “tongue” licking (lube up for a realistic glide) targets your clit for maximum orgasming power, and you can also hold it against a male partner’s penis during a blowjob to really turn up the heat.
REVIEW: “Volta gave me completely new sensations — pinpoint and broad all at once. I used plenty of lube, otherwise I think the tips could be a bit irritating. I found spots I'd never felt before around my clit and lips, giving me deep orgasms. The rumbly vibes really penetrate. Teasing my clit while being penetrated with a dildo was a new height of heaven.”
If you’re packing an oral sex toy for sexy time on the go, you want something that’s multifunctional. This sonic clitoral massager from LELO fits the bill: Get off with sucking or vibrating action via 12 pleasure settings, including a cruise control option (talk about fitting the travel vibe!) that switches between intensities for you.
Another feature that makes it an attractive out-of-town option is that it’s compact (smaller than your average pair of sunglasses) and has a locking mechanism to prevent embarrassing “where’s that coming from?” in-luggage buzzing.
REVIEW: “Heck yeah! Should have gotten it sooner. Great for single fun or fun with a partner. Charge holds nicely even with frequent use. It's easy to use and easy to cycle through the different patterns/intensities. Recommend laying down a towel or using it in the bath/shower until you get an idea of how you'll react.”
The tip of this bestseller forms a suction around your clitoral area so that a tongue-shaped piece can vibrate and rotate and flutter against your cum button while stimulating air blows. You can adjust the modes to focus on sucking or the “tongue,” or find a setting that’s a perfect mix of both.
REVIEW: “The functionality of this toy is truly impressive. It boasts a range of customizable settings that cater to different preferences and moods, ensuring that you can find the perfect rhythm and intensity for you. The sleek design is not only visually appealing, but it also enhances the overall experience.”
Tantalize inside and out with this suction plus vibrating combo. It features a suction head that sucks and blows your clit, and it’s attached to a flexible vibrating arm so that you can enjoy both external and internal arousal.
REVIEW: “This toy is WORTH IT! When I saw the price I was skeptical, but this does not disappoint. If you are a woman who needs a little more, this toy will leave you satisfied in minutes. Ten out of 10, ‘chef's kiss.’”
You may have seen cute rose vibrators all over social media and wondered if and how they work. They rely on suction and teasing air flow to bring you to your pleasure point, and they fit perfectly in the palm of your hand so you can focus on feeling great. Try taking it into the shower or bath to really elevate self-care.
REVIEW: "This product is fun, and packs a punch. Takes a little maneuvering, but wow! Give it a try, you won’t regret it.”
Place the erect penis inside this soft sleeve that “vibrates and sucks on the penis,” Kort says. “It is easy to clean, and if you use the Lovense app, you can create your own custom on-demand pleasure patterns for personal or long-distance fun.” The sleeve accommodates various penis sizes, and you can adjust the settings to feel more like oral or penetrative sex — don’t forget the lube!
REVIEW: “The suction on this is unreal. It feels real. Vibration is outstanding. It’s easy to clean and air dry. The closest sound level I would compare it to is if your phone was vibrating on your desk, but slightly quieter.”
Everyone’s sensitivities are a little different, and if your clit requires focused attention or you’re seeking multiple orgasms, this clitoral pinpoint vibrator may be the oral sex toy for you. A narrow, soft, bendable vibrating tip moves in an elliptical motion to bring you super targeted clitoral pleasure just like the real thing.
REVIEW: “I love how this vibration is different, you just have to learn how to use it on the right spot. It doesn’t make much noise and that’s something I like it about it. I enjoy using it and it makes me feel good.”
You can get that fingering-while-licking oral sex vibe with a rabbit vibrator. It has two little “bunny ears” for clitoral stimulation that are attached to an insertable dildo-shaped shaft that vibrates inside of you so you can attempt a G-spot and clitoral orgasm.
REVIEW: This is the first time I've purchased something like this. I was concerned it would be a disappointment, but I'm thrilled with it! Easy to use, soft touch with some "natural" flexibility, and hits all the right spots.”
We talked to health experts to find out how oral sex toys can enhance solo and partner pleasure, as well as our overall health. We also asked about different ways to use oral sex toys, and what to look for when shopping. Then we scoured the massive pool of oral sex toy options (and read tons of reviews) to find the ones that best recreate the real deal.
✔️ Pleasure points: To avoid wasting money on toys you'll never use, spend some time figuring out what pleasure points you want to hit, and do your research (like reading this article!). “All the choices can seem intimidating or overwhelming, so do some homework first before buying. Look for information about how the different toys work and what to expect while using them to find the right one for you,” Kort says.
✔️ Goal: Think about if you want something that imitates licking, tongue thrusting, or teasing, a toy that you and a partner can use together or something that allows you to explore new ways of enjoying oral sex.
✔️ Materials: Non-porous materials like medical-grade silicone or ABS plastic are ideal for external toys. They can also work for internal toys, as can stainless steel, borosilicate glass or porcelain. Bottom line, you just want to make sure it's safe and easy to clean. If you're not sure about allergies, avoid: jelly, rubber, PVC and vinyl, the latter of which can also contain phthalates.
“The sex toy industry is valued at $29 billion, and it is expected to reach more than $50 billion within the next few years. Shoppers literally have thousands of sex toys to choose from for different sexual orientations, kinks and fetishes, specific body parts and so much more,” Kort says.
Knowing the best ways to clean and store sex toys can help keep them effective and last longer.
Oral sex toys can do more than just help you enjoy a good sex life together with a partner or alone. “Sexual health is a really important factor in your overall health and wellbeing from a physical, mental, emotional and relational perspective," says Zar. Sex also naturally evolves as you get older — hormonal changes during menopause may cause libido to slump, change your sensitivities or make orgasm harder to achieve — but sex toys can often be the helping hand you need.
