Sylvan Township gears up for future emergencies with proactive measures - Brainerd Dispatch | News, weather, sports from Brainerd and Baxter

PILLAGER — In an effort to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents, Sylvan Township in Cass County has taken proactive steps to prepare for future emergencies.

Sylvan Town Hall, located in southern Cass County, will provide residents with an emergency shelter in case of an emergency such as a long-term power outage, tornado or other disaster. Covering more than 30 square miles, Sylvan Township is the largest township in the county and is home to 2,881 residents. Generator Turbines

A milestone in the preparedness initiative was the installation of a standby generator system capable of supplying electricity to the town hall, township officials reported in a news release. The generator will ensure critical operations can continue unabated, even during power disruptions. Sylvan Township has acquired a larger propane tank to support the generator, further bolstering its capacity to weather emergencies.

Before Sylvan Town Hall could be approved as an emergency shelter, a reverse osmosis water filtration system also needed to be installed. Water testing by the Minnesota Department of Health had determined that the township’s water source has levels of manganese that are too high for infant consumption.

“Within the past 10 years, at least three long-term power outages — longer than 24 hours — have left township residents without electricity,” said Greg Booth, chair of the Sylvan Township Board. “Most of these households depend on electricity for their water, due to having individual wells on their property. A generator and a water filtration system to provide safe water for babies and kids would allow the township to offer temporary safe shelter to residents who do not have other alternatives.”

While specific details about the emergency shelter are yet to be finalized, Sylvan Township is strategically laying the groundwork so the community is well-prepared to address a range of emergencies.

“The Township applied for Community Match Funding with Sourcewell to help cover half the cost of the generator and installation, as well as the water filtration system,” said Booth. “The application process went so smoothly and it was accepted. Our share of the equipment will come out of the Township’s General Fund.”

The township’s commitment to disaster readiness was underscored as Jenna Ruggles, clerk of Sylvan Township, recently completed training to operate the industrial-size generator. Her previous experience had been using a smaller one for a fish house.

“I feel that some of our residents are prepared for this type of situation,” said Ruggles. “For those who are not, or are new to the area, or don’t have the financial means to be prepared — we are here for them.”

Sylvan Township’s forward-thinking approach to emergency preparedness sets a commendable example for other communities, officials reported. By proactively investing in resources and partnering with Sourcewell, the township ensures its own resilience, but also fosters a greater sense of security among its residents.

“We truly appreciate Sourcewell’s support,” said Booth. “With their assistance and Community Match Funding, our township will have the capacity to swiftly open our doors during a crisis and provide our residents with access to necessities.”
