NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The Normal Fire Department responded to a fire at the Rivian Automotive Assembly Plant on Thursday.
According to a Normal fire news release, firefighters responded to the plant at about 11:30 a.m. due to a fire under a section of the assembly line conveyor that moves the vehicle chassis down the assembly line.
Firefighters used fire extinguishers to quickly knock out the fire. Employees were safely evacuated from the building. One employee was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene but was not taken to the hospital.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire department did confirm that the fire did not involve vehicle or battery components. The estimated amount of damage the fire caused is not available at this time.
Firefighters took time to ventilate the facility and performed an air quality test to ensure the air was safe to breathe when they were finished.
Control of the building was returned to Rivian just after 1 p.m.
Rivian’s Corporate Communications Sr. Manager Kelli Felker said employees have returned to the building, and night shift employees should report according to their normal schedule.
