A 10-year-old Chihuahua named Chico was “confused” to find himself at a North Carolina shelter after the family he spent his whole life with recently surrendered him.

“Every time a car would pull up in our driveway, he would be looking aggressively to try to get to that vehicle thinking it was his people coming back,” Judy Sims, executive director of the Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County in Concord, told McClatchy News. “We see this so often when people surrender their animals.”

Sims said that Chico was initially surrendered in South Carolina. Why? Because his owners reportedly had trouble potty-training him after 10 years.

Despite the claims of his longtime family, the North Carolina shelter told McClatchy News that Chico’s kennel has been clean since he arrived. But he’s also been refusing to eat since his world was turned upside down.

The shelter describes Chico as an “older gentleman” that “quickly attaches to certain people and can often have choice words for others he doesn't know.”

“Chico is a guy that needs to build trust to feel safe, and we don't blame him due to what he's been through,” the shelter wrote on Facebook earlier this month. “Chico would love nothing more than a lap to snuggle up on all day or at least be by his person's side.”

Chico is looking for a “very specific home environment” within North Carolina. According to the shelter, he will do best in a “mature, low traffic home” that doesn’t have young children or other pets.

“He is going to be an awesome dog for somebody who is going to take some time, a few minutes, to get to know him and his personality,” Sims said.
