South Central Alabama city, county donates new radiology equipment to community hospital - WAKA 8

Recently, all of the Crenshaw Community Hospital’s radiology equipment quit working or was reaching the end of its life. With Crenshaw County being a very rural area, and the next major hospital being over 50 miles away, the city of Luverne and the Crenshaw County Commission realized they needed to do something quickly.

“I talked with the County Commission and they were willing to pitch in,” stated Luverne Mayor Ed Beasley. “It’s a much needed thing for a rural hospital, especially one that’s basically 50 miles from a major hospital.” Dr Radiology Equipment

They worked together to provide funding for a new CT scanner, digital x-ray machine, and a contrast injector.

“We now have a new digital room that will allow us to take much better images and take much quicker images so we can better care for our patients,” stated Charles Tompkins, who is the Chairman of Medical Staff at Crenshaw Community Hospital. “We particularly need it, too, in the emergency room because with the CAT scan machine we can now better care for folks that come in might be victims of trauma or someone with a suspected stroke.”

With the new equipment, Crenshaw Community Hospital can now offer radiology services that patients were having to travel outside the area to get.

“This is a game changer for our citizens around, even the surrounding counties, that we have this hospital here in Crenshaw County,” stated District 4 Commission Stallion Sasser. “We’re only populated over 13,000 people and to have this hospital in a rural county like this is viable to our citizens and their health.”

The hospital provides medical, surgical, behavioral health and emergency services, as well as having a rural health clinic.
