EAST WENATCHEE — A big stuffed pickle and the Kool-Aid Man hung in the air as prizes at the Whac-A-Mole game in the midway section of Funtastic Shows Carnival on opening day, Friday.

The roughly 15-ride carnival, including those for kids, is in the parking lot of the Wenatchee Valley Mall, 611 Valley Mall Parkway, East Wenatchee by Sportsman’s Warehouse. Through May 5, hours of operation are 3-10 p.m. Monday-Friday, 12-10 p.m. Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. on the last Sunday.

Ride and game tickets are sold at the door only with no entrance fee. Prices in cash are 34 tickets for $20, 68 for $40, 120 for $60 and 250 for $115. A $1-$2 charge is added for credit card purchases. All rides take 11-12 tickets each.

The game attractions for prizes include Skee-Ball, crossbow shooting, balloons popping, Hoop Shots, Lucky Duck, Water Gun Fun and Ring Toss Bottle. At the game Knock ‘Em Off You, Funtastic Shows employee Andrew Brinslow from South Africa said he enjoys traveling for this work. Supervisor Daniel Maxwell of Portland said the carnival, which is based in Portland, travels along the 1-5 corridor from southern Oregon to Lindon, Wash.

At the bumper cars, a group of eight friends, all seventh-graders from Foothills Middle School, were smiling and laughing as they called “Incoming!” and “I’m stuck!” while steering, jamming and gliding around the track. They were looking forward to playing in the Apple Blossom Festival Youth Parade the next day in school band, drill team and mariachi groups.

Coming off the Zero Gravity ride, siblings Summer Bernal, 18 and Fernando Mondragon, 20, rejoined their older sister Maribi Bernal with excitement. “It was scary, I’m dizzy, still spinning!,” Mondragon said. They said they remembered being kids at a carnival with bear and dog spinners and the pin station, and now, where they would make new memories.

In the kiddie games area, at the Dragon Wagon, the lone passenger was Yvette Yant, 4. “Baby, hands up! Wow!” said her dad Dylan Yant while her mom Yuliza Yant held 9-month-old Isela Yant, filming with a camera phone. Yvette kept her hands firmly on the handlebars.

Teenage brothers Sterling Paton Dodd, 15, and Zachary Dodd, 19, rushed from ride to ride, building in excitement and adrenaline. “As you can tell, I’m Dad. I hold all the stuff,” said Tim Dodd, 51, of East Wenatchee, putting their things in his Levi’s sweatshirt pocket, while his sons took another spin on the Sinbad.
