The new equipment incorporates the technique of surgical microscopy guided by OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), which is still little widespread in Andalusia and which is very useful for the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal, glaucoma and corneal diseases, as it provides a lot of information.
According to the same information, it is especially useful for corneal transplantation, both penetrating and lamellar (DMEK, DSEK, DSAEK, DWEK and DALK), and amniotic membrane transplantation, among others;also for the implantation of drainage devices (MIGS) for glaucoma;in retina for interface pathology such as vitreous-macular traction, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and also in macular subretinal hemorrhages or complex cases of pathological myopia, for example;and, in the case of cataracts, for corneal alterations such as Descemet's detachments or incision alterations, among others.
This is because the technology processes images in sections with a penetration of millimeters and allows the visualization of the layers of the eye in real time during the intervention, among other functionalities.It is also a minimally invasive technique for the patient and, thanks to its precision, it is much safer.
This new workstation that has been installed at the Provincial Hospital, replaces the existing microscope in this surgical block that has been transferred to the Los Morales Hospital to perform retinal interventions there through posterior vitrectomy.Until now, this possibility did not exist in Los Morales, therefore, the incorporation of the second microscope will allow the number of interventions to increase.
This microscope is added to the rest of the technologies and equipment that the Reina Sofía Hospital has acquired in recent months for a value of eight million euros, of which more than 163,000 have had an impact on the Ophthalmology service (chairs, laser phototherapy, cryostat, among others).
