GEA Introduces Lockout-Tagout (LoTo) for Aseptic Double-Seat Valves

In the realm of production, inadequately secured process plants can pose significant risks. Accidents may occur if machinery is unauthorizedly activated during maintenance, leading to the release of stored energy, such as hydraulic pressure, compressed air, gas, steam, electrical energy, or fluids, causing harm to operating personnel and equipment. GEA addresses this concern by implementing LoTo devices in its Aseptomag double chamber valves, which serve as effective control points for managing and securing the plant's energy supply.

Pascal Bär, Senior Director of Product Management for GEA’s aseptic valve technology, highlights the simplicity and efficacy of this safety measure. "An increasing number of companies prefer this comparatively simple protection against the sudden release of residual energy, although legal obligations may differ from country to country," says Bär. The Aseptomag valve employs a socket pin for locking, eliminating the need to remove the control top. Lockout Tag

The LoTo system for aseptic double-seat valves includes a mechanical lock (lockout) and a visual tag (tagout). The modified valve actuator of the GEA Aseptomag DK double-chamber valves incorporates a special lantern and piston rod extension for the socket pin. Operators securely lock the valve by inserting the socket pin until the metallic stop is reached, preventing any movement of the actuator and valve disk. A red safety clamp around the threaded ring signals that the subsequent process area is locked, and a padlock ensures seamless identification and documentation.

Following the introduction of the LoTo system for hygienic valve technology in 2021, GEA's expansion to include the entire valve portfolio benefits industries such as dairies, beverages, food, and new food manufacturers that prioritize the highest levels of hygiene in their processes.
