A good solid EDC flashlight is a sensible and long-term investment. What do we expect from an EDC flashlight? It should be able to be powered by a battery, be bright, and should also be able to withstand a lot. Today, we want to take a look at the FENIX PD36 TAC and check which criteria it meets.
This is what the FENIX PD36 TAC looks like in action. It is a good 14cm long and has a comfortable diameter of 25.4mm on the body. The lamp head has a diameter of just under 28mm.
The flashlight is made of aluminum and weighs 163g with the battery. The thread is equipped with an O-ring. The FENIX PD36 TAC is waterproof to IP68 and also shockproof. It has fallen out of our hands several times, but it still works perfectly.
The FENIX PD36 TAC disassembled into its main components. These are the body with lamp head, pressure switch, pocket clip, and of course, the battery. This 3.6V 5000 mAh battery in the 21700 form factor delivers a lot of power to the LED in the lamp head.
Here are the exact lumen and candela specifications from Fenix for you. Up to 3000 lumens with 18,700 candela are possible. Very impressive.
The belt clip is very solidly designed and does what it's supposed to do. If you don't need it, you can remove it quickly and easily.
The most important part of the FENIX PD36 TAC, the battery. This is equipped with a USB-C port for charging. Very practical. The battery has overcharge protection to prevent accidental destruction. This makes handling much easier.
Simply plug in the USB-C cable and the red light lights up on the positive pole. When everything is fully charged, it switches to green. If you want to carry additional batteries for safety, you can also buy them individually from FENIX. The positive pole should be inserted towards the lamp head in the FENIX PD36 TAC. If you make a mistake, no problem, because the lamp is equipped with reverse polarity protection. It simply will not light up and will not break.
The control switch/end cap. The cap is equipped with a rotary switch selector and a push button. You have access to a Tactical Mode with 2,000 lumens and a Duty Mode with five different brightness levels. In the middle is the pressure switch lock position. If this is selected, you cannot press the push button. If you hold the switch fully pressed, regardless of which mode you are in, the strobe mode starts.
In our video on the FENIX PD36 TAC, we show you the various lighting modes.
As mentioned, the FENIX PD36 TAC is waterproof, so it doesn't mind lying in the stream and shining.
Of course, this also makes it immune to rain, what more could you want?
CONCLUSION: The FENIX PD36 TAC meets our initially formulated requirements. It is bright, sturdy, and operates on a rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery is particularly important for EDC lamps, as batteries can add up in cost over time. The operation is simple and leaves nothing to be desired. We mostly used the Tactical Mode, as it is simply bright and there are no surprises. In Duty Mode, the last brightness level used is stored. In the heat of the moment, it can be a bit annoying if you want bright light, but only get 30 lumens and have to cycle through everything first. Nevertheless, the Duty Mode has its justification and has proven to be very practical. Overall, the FENIX PD36 TAC is a solid choice for an EDC flashlight.
The FENIX PD36 TAC is available directly from FENIX in Germany starting at €99.99.
