AT&T adds fiber optic bypass in event of cut lines - Pleasanton Express

Atascosa County officials and AT&T executives recently met to discuss the problems created in the area as a result of cut fiber lines that debilitate area communications.

Over the past 10-15 years, the county has experienced multiple regionwide service outages including but not limited to cellular, landlines and home internet due to fiber lines being severed in different locations. Server Racks

“As seen in the comments about our notices posted on Facebook when these outages have occurred, we understand and acknowledge all of the frustration these outages have caused,” said Atascosa County IT Director Justin Vasquez. “We’ve had multiple meetings with executives in different departments at AT&T where we have discussed possible resolutions and preventative measures to keep this from happening again.”

AT&T representatives have announced that a new fiber line has been installed along US-281 south from San Antonio which is now connected to their main line that currently runs down IH-37 into Pleasanton to create a “fiber ring” for the area.

Vasquez said that if a fiber line is cut, the traffic will back-feed from the other connection and keep the area online. According to AT&T, the maximum amount of time it will take for services to return online after a fiber line is severed will be five minutes.

“As we’ve seen, a fiber cut usually takes 10-12 hours to restore, so this is a major improvement on restoration,” Vasquez added. “Our goal, as public servants, is to ensure that you, our citizens, are able to stay engaged with your community and those who aim to serve and represent you.”

County officials said the main priority is to make sure that citizens have sufficient and continuous access to lifelines such as law enforcement, public safety, health and wellness groups, family, friends and so many other services that are held up by the technologies in which we all rely.

“We will continue to communicate with AT&T and other corporations that are vital to our standard of living to hold high standards that we believe should never go down,” Vasquez said. “Thank you all for your input and patience as we work to serve you.”
