In California at the Donum Estate — renowned for its production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — the Vertical Panorama Pavilion offers visitors an extraordinary wine-tasting experience under a multicolored glass canopy. Using Vanceva™ Color PVB interlayers for laminated glass, Studio Other Spaces, led by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann, encapsulates the essence of the vineyard’s landscape.
‘Each color in the canopy glass represents the environmental variables affecting the vineyard, making the pavilion a vivid representation of the site’s natural beauty,’ explains Behmann. Switchable Smart Film

Drawing inspiration from historical circular calendars, Studio Other Spaces integrates elements like soil, vegetation, wind, sun, atmosphere, and rain into the pavilion’s vibrant canopy, embodying the character of the wine. Up to four Vanceva™ Color PVB interlayers were combined to create 24 shades. The company’s advanced interlayers enable designers to select the exact color and translucency levels for their glass enhancements. The full spectrum can be explored through their color selector tool.
The pavilion’s conical canopy, spanning 14.5 meters in diameter, is equipped with 832 laminated glass panels in transparent hues. These vivid colors — encompassing greens, golds, reds, burgundies, violets, and blues — symbolize the regional weather parameters: solar radiance, wind intensity, temperature, and humidity.

The canopy’s intricate construction showcases the collaboration between Studio Other Spaces, envisioning a fusion of art and architecture for the venue, König Glasbau, responsible for fabricating the laminated glass panels, and Hahner Technik, who handled the canopy’s fabrication and installation. The panels, laminated with up to four layers of Vanceva™ Color PVB interlayers and an additional protective solar coating, are held by custom aluminum frames and mounted onto a stainless steel structure. This design ensures that the panels align, avoiding overlapping to preserve the pure colors and secure proper water drainage.
To adapt to the region’s climatic conditions, the pavilion underwent rigorous testing, including wind tunnel simulations for cooling optimization. The conical shape and north-facing oculus facilitate efficient heat dissipation through the top of the pavilion, providing a comfortable environment for visitors.
