What is it you’re looking to achieve with a mini exercise bike? A bare-bones model will work well if you just want something to help you quickly burn 100 calories or keep your blood flowing as you watch TV. If you see it as a physical therapy tool, on the other hand, you’ll likely benefit from a model with multiple levels of resistance and app-assisted tracking, which can help you keep tabs on your progress. 

Before committing to a mini exercise bike, measure the space available under your desk to ensure a pedaler won’t cramp your style. Standard desks tend to range between 27 and 30 inches high, and, depending on your height, you’ll need at least 13 inches of space between the top of the pedaler and the bottom of your desk to ensure your knees won’t hit its underside.

“One thing to watch out for is the shift factor: a lot of these tiny ‘bikes’ shift around when you pedal even a little rigorously,” Polish says. “Make sure they have reliable stoppers on them, or consider putting them on a small exercise mat for extra stability. Sitting directly over them (instead of sitting in a more reclined position) can also help with the slide factor.”
