A 3-year-old riding a tricycle died Sunday after being struck by a truck in Chantilly.

Officers responded to the incident in the 14500 block of Trans World Avenue at 3:48 p.m. rear axle for golf cart

Preliminarily, detectives determined a 3-year-old was riding a tricycle on a private driveway and crossed onto Trans World Avenue, Fairfax County police said in a news release.

"Subsequently, the driver of a 2012 Ford F-450 struck the child at a low rate of speed," the release said.

The 3-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing the victim’s name.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors. The circumstances surrounding the child's death are still being investigated.

The police department's chaplain unit and additional officers will continue to provide support and an increased presence in the affected community, the release said.

Victim specialists have been assigned to ensure the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.

Detectives would like to speak to anyone who may have information about the case. Call the Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543.
