Electric Ferraris Will Have Individual Motors For Each Wheel | CarBuzz

New filings indicate which route Ferrari will take for its eventual EVs.

CarBuzz has discovered a new patent filing at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and it shows that Ferrari is considering using in-wheel hub motors when it finally produces its first electric car. This is a departure from previous patents we've found. Three years ago, we found designs for an alternative layout for an electric Ferrari where the electric motors are housed within each axle. This is similar to the layout used by the hybrid Ferrari SF90 Stradale, but in an all-electric supercar, Maranello can and should plan things differently. In-wheel hub motors seem like the best way to accommodate both drive units and battery packs in a way that mimics a mid-engine feel, something that Ferrari has promised will characterize its eventual EVs.

While most of us are dreading the end of the combustion-powered supercar, Ferrari believes that electric supercars open a world of new possibilities for engagement and excitement. The Italian automaker promises that its eventual EVs will get pulses racing through their use of "precision mechanics, fluid dynamics, and performance software."

With individual motors for each wheel, Ferrari will be able to acutely manage torque vectoring and power delivery settings in a way that combustion cars simply cannot, and this is what will make the electric supercars of tomorrow exciting to drive, but that's only one small part of a much bigger package.

Ferrari has also filed to protect designs for an innovative new tactile feedback system for EVs, with this intended to help drivers better communicate with a car that provides little in the way of noise and vibration, and there are plans for a built-in coaching system that can help the Ferrari driver of the future get to grips with their supercar without a real person instructing them on-track.

Electric Motor Kit For Cycle Ferrari could easily have launched an EV of some sort by now, but it's clear that Maranello wants to ensure it doesn't get off on the wrong foot. It will still be a few years before we see a fully electric Fezza, but when it does arrive, it will be packed with technologies designed to make it just as thrilling to drive as the combustion-powered supercars of today.
