GOSHEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A woman’s discovery of an Apple AirTag attached to her vehicle has unraveled into a case of electronic stalking.
Anthony Magro, 33, of Bridgeport, was identified in this case as the owner of the tracking device.
It all started on March 27, 2023, when the woman, residing in Goshen contacted Troop B in North Canaan to report finding the an Apple AirTag tracking device. It was affixed to the interior of her vehicle’s front driver’s side wheel rim.
The woman found the device following alerts received on her phone indicating that an AirTag device was in close proximity to her vehicle.
An investigation revealed that the woman had received similar alerts in February 2023, initially attributing them to a relative leaving behind a set of Apple AirPods earbuds in her vehicle. However, on March 24, 2023, another notification prompted her to thoroughly look through her vehicle.
She removed the AirTag from her vehicle and place it in a plastic bag, which she transported back to her residence, prior to contacting Troop B. Police were able to obtain subscriber information associated with the specific serial number on the AirTag.
The information led Anthony Magro with a last known address in Torrington. The woman said that she was not familiar with and had never had any interactions with him.
Despite efforts to locate Magro at his Torrington address, investigators were met with dead ends. On May 8, 2023, they made contact with Magro who explained that he relocated to Bridgeport. When police attempted to make arrangements to meet Magro, he said that he did not drive and would need transportation.
Communication attempts with Magro proved challenging, with calls redirected to voicemail on multiple occasions. It wasn’t until February 7, 2024, that authorities managed to establish contact with Magro in West Haven.
Upon confirming an active warrant for his arrest, Magro was taken into custody and transported to Troop B in North Canaan.
He was later released on a $10,000 cash/surety bond pending arraignment at Torrington Superior Court on Feb. 16.
