Lockheed Martin Invests $3 Million In Technology Company To Automate Wire Harness Manufacturing | ASSEMBLY

BRISTOL, UK—Q5D Technology, a company specializing in hardware and software tools for automating wiring harness manufacture, recently announced a $3 million investment round, led by Lockheed Martin Ventures, the venture investment arm of Lockheed Martin Corporate.

Q5D has developed robotic tools combined with sophisticated computer-aided design and manufacturing software, enabling the autonomous addition of wiring and printed electronics directly onto product surfaces. This automation offers not only improved quality and reliability but also significant reductions in manufacturing costs compared to traditional manual processes. Car Door Edge Protector

The company has gained significant traction in the automotive sector, driven by the industry’s rapid transition to electric powertrains, where automation is crucial for cost reduction and simplifying complex supply chains.

Lockheed Martin’s investment arrives at a pivotal moment for Q5D as it transitions from project-based revenue to machine sales, following the successful launch of its first hardware product last year.

“We see the opportunity for increased versatility and agility in Q5D’s technology,” said Chris Moran, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Ventures. “Wiring is a complex and expensive aspect of the manufacturing process. Q5D’s technology can offer flexibility with the potential for hardware to efficiently switch between manufacturing different parts without compromising quality.”

ASSEMBLY is thrilled to return to the Music City Center in Nashville, TN for The ASSEMBLY Show SOUTH on May 1-2, 2024. This is a booming time for manufacturing and the U.S. South is right in the heart of the action. According to ASSEMBLY’s most recent annual capital spending survey, the South is projected to account for 31 percent of total spending this year, marking the fifth straight year this region has accounted for at least 30 percent of capital spending in the U.S.

In this session, manufacturers will learn how Quality function deployment (QFD)  can transform consumers’ qualitative demands into quantitative parameters that will shape the design of their product and, ultimately, their manufacturing process.
