U-shaped concrete pieces construct 4 modular kindergartens by summary

4 Modular Kindergartens by Summary Studio has revolutionized kindergarten construction through a prefabricated modular system built around U-shaped reinforced concrete pieces. This innovative approach allowed for the simultaneous construction of four kindergartens in just 13 months across different parts of Lisbon, showcasing the potential of modular design to address urban infrastructure needs efficiently and sustainably. The project stemmed from a public tender held by the municipality of Lisbon to expand the city’s network of public kindergartens. The architects developed a standardized design solution, prioritizing economically viable intervention, rapid execution, and the creation of an identifiable image, making these facilities recognizable throughout the city. Photographer Fernando Guerra captures the project.

Summary Studio‘s proposal is based on the overlapping of reinforced concrete structural modules with a ‘U’ profile, which compose the building’s walls. The choice of this material is related not only to the ease of use of the modular system, but also to the competition brief´s requirement to guarantee high durability and low maintenance. The typification of the designs naturally implies a formal analogy between the four kindergartens. The form of the buildings comes from the potential and limitations imposed by the modular construction system. The exposed joints highlight how each module is interlocked, emphasizing both the structure’s simplicity and its modular aesthetic.

These 4 nurseries feature a similar organic and functional distribution: two groups of overlapping ‘U-shaped’ modules, housing various compartments, and a central corridor between them where all horizontal and vertical circulation takes place (corridors, stairwells, and elevators). The main sections of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning infrastructure are located within these central corridor lines, reaching the compartments through the adjacent side walls. This linear arrangement ensures easy user orientation within the building and visibility between all areas, promoting functionality and safety.

The kindergartens incorporate thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces to extend learning beyond the classroom. Paved, non-slip areas accommodate wheeled toys, while gardens provide opportunities for children’s play and interaction with nature. The landscaping focuses on low-maintenance, climate-adapted vegetation that avoids allergens and promotes soil permeability. Inside, the nurseries span two floors, balancing compact footprints with spacious external recreational areas. Essential services such as kitchens, laundry areas, and administrative offices occupy the ground floor, while children’s activity rooms are spread across both levels, each with direct access to outdoor terraces or playgrounds.

The prefabricated components, including the foundations, were manufactured in a factory under controlled conditions and assembled on-site within days. These prefabricated components not only form the structure of the building but also define the facades, floors, and interior compartments. This method minimized on-site disruptions such as noise, dust, and waste, aligning with the city’s goals for sustainable and community-friendly construction. The system also ensured consistency in quality and faster project completion. The project’s success lies not only in its functional and aesthetic results but also in the streamlined construction process.
