PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — A wasteful treatment plant nearly 20 years in the making is one step closer to being complete.
City of Pflugerville officials broke ground today at the Wilbarger Wastewater Plant after they brought the land back in 2009. The $247 million dollar plant is meant to double the amount of water the city can process.
The city’s utility director, Brandon Pritchett, said growth is one of the drivers for increasing that processing capacity.
“We have this tremendous growth along with Samsung in Taylor and Tesla in Austin. And right smack dab in the middle of them is the City of Pfugerville. And so, we know that we are experiencing that same growth, and we know that those large centers of employment; those people need somewhere to live. And they need somewhere where they can take a shower, and they can flush the toilet and it goes somewhere,” he said to KXAN on Thursday.
The new wastewater treatment facility plans to transfer wastewater flow from the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP) to the new interceptors and treatment facility. This project aims to reduce environmental impacts and O&M requirements within the system, expanding Pflugerville’s infrastructure, the city said in a news release.
The whole plant is expected to be completed by 2027.
