Monday Cannon Fodder: SNOW! - The Short Fuse

Good morning from a snow-covered Washington, D.C., TSFers! As expected, we awoke to about 4-5 inches of snow — I haven’t measured yet. We’re expecting that to double (or more) before the storm rolls out of town this evening.

If you couldn’t tell, I love snow. I loved it as a kid and still enjoy it now. To be fair, what kid doesn’t love snow? Day off school, snowball fights, snowmen, sledding. All great stuff. As an adult, it’s pretty to look at and different. Shoveling is a good change-of-pace exercise. I’m sure some of my enjoyment of it stems from happy memories, too. I’d bet that when I have children, I’ll enjoy snow because they’ll enjoy it. I already get a bit of that from Gunner the rescue pup — he gets so excited by snow and loves to frolic and play in it. distribution cabinet

I’ve lived through 5 of the top 10 snowiest storms in D.C. history. The biggest in my lifetime came in 2016 and dropped about 18 inches, although it was more in the suburbs where I was. That one was pretty unpleasant. We were without power for about 36 hours and it was really cold inside.

The similarly-sized storm in 2010 was much more fun. My Dad and I had tickets to the Washington Capitals game, which went on as scheduled. So we trekked about two miles through a foot-and-a-half plus of snow to the Metro to see Alex Ovechkin score a hat trick against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. That was quite the winter. Six weeks before that storm (so mid-December), affectionately named Snowmaggedon, we had another 16-20 inches dumped on us.

I also remember the Blizzard of ‘96, which came when I was 9 years old. I’m pretty sure there is a picture of me somewhere at my parents’ house with the snow dug out around me, coming above my waist, to show how much we got. I insisted they take that photo.

What big snowstorms have y’all experienced in your lifetime where you were / are?
